There will always be someone who thinks its tacky. And there'll always be someone who thinks that a traditional cake is tacky. Personally I think it's a cute idea, really fun and less formal than a full cake slice on a plate with a fork. Also I'm not a big cake person so I'm up for any way to make eating cake type substances more fun.
I love the cupcake idea bcuz some of the places i had looked at charge a cake cutting fee but sometimes the venue will include the cake. I think im gonna do the cupcake thing.
That is such a cute idea!! I think you should go for it! Ignore naysayers of cupcakes, a cupcake is just a piece of cake in a wrapper. Seriously some people are so NITPICKY! I think it's a fun idea, and I would think it was so cool if I attended a wedding with cupcakes!
I think it's an awesome idea, in fact we are having cupcakes as well. I agree with littlemissmoo, and you are not going to be able to please everyone. If you are trying to save money you could also have a traditional cake, but do sheet cakes in the back. Your display cake would be a smaller cake, maybe two tiers, and then more cake in the back that will be cut and served to guests. Wedding cakes can cost a lot because of the labor that goes into stacking the layers. Just another option to look into :)
Girlfriend - cupcakes are totally in this year!!! And it's a fun little spin on tradition. I would eat a cupcake!
Go with what makes you happy! Don't let anyone's "pushy" opinions cloud your feelings. Future in-laws being pushy on something like this makes me mad!
I love cupcakes and I am doing them for sure. Mine are going to be pretty simple and we are adding blackberries, raspberries and blueberries to the top. My caterer is setting a table up like this with my colors -

I love both ideas! That it not tacky at all! I love the cupcake stand with the cake on top!
I had cupcakes at my wedding and they were a HUGE hit.
Do it, it was really fun and sweet.
we're 95% for sure doing cupcakes, and it's a fairly formal wedding (ie evening, ceremony at a synagogue and reception at a hotel). not tacky at all! :)
I love the idea and look of cupcakes! I don't think its tacky at all. And I'm all about the less expensive alternative!
I am most likely having cupcakes. I love those:

my main reason is that they don't need cutting, are easy to take home as favors, and I can have lots of flavors! And they look really cute! (:
I dont think its tacky at all. I did cake because it was traditional but I wouldve love to have cupcakes too! What about doing some mini cupcakes so people can eat them in 1 bite?
Cupcakes are definitely NOT tacky! If that's what you want and your mom can make them, don't let others' pushy opinions sway you. People who are uncomfortable picking them up and eating them will use a fork. I was at a baby shower with cupcakes yesterday, and about half of us got forks to eat our cupcakes and half picked 'em up. People know what to do :-)
I love, love, love cupcakes! We are also doing cupcakes at our wedding. I don't think they are tacky at all! I agree with many others that someone will always have something to complain about. I know it is hard to ignore people's negative comments sometimes, but you need to do what YOU want because it is YOUR day! Good luck with whatever you decide! :)
I love cupcakes and thats what we are doing! This is my inspiration grass and all!
If it's on the cover of Martha Stewart Weddings, it isn't tacky.
@beachbride-- thanks!!
@smdude--Here's a link you can forward to your family members who aren't quite up on the current wedding literature: http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/article/cupcake-tower
I love the cupcake idea. They are just the right size!!!
We are having a cake, but I did seriously consider cupcakes. We aren't able to do them ourselves though, and it would have cost about the same as the cake we are getting.
I am doing wedding mini cupcakes from a place called Dozen here in Pittsburgh. This allows us to pick 5 different flavors of cupcakes for guests to select from. We are also having a small cake on top for us to cut. The cupcakes are totally about $300. Its cheaper, I think they are adorable annnnd there is no cake cutting fee ;-).
Is your aunt a good baker?
I used to bartend weddings, and after sampling a lot of cake (and I LOVE cake), I was very sad to discover that the majority of wedding cakes aren't really that tasty. As a true cake lover, I would rather have delicious cupcakes than a slice of dry cake any day.
I agree. Whatever you decide is fine. I saw a girl that did cupcakes shaped as flowers for her wedding that were at each place setting atop an upside-down wine glass. The base of the glass was like a pedestal. It was a pretty ingenious idea.
Awwe thanks so much everyone :) It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one that wants to do cupcakes! I'm pretty sure we are going to do cupcakes.
@yes I love those cupcakes! They are so cute :)
We're definitely doing cupcakes! I'm so excited about it, and it's so nice, because we will be able to have a bunch of different flavors rather than just one or two!
Cupcakes are so cute and a big trend now! Your MIL and SIL can eat with forks. And truthfully, it's your and your FI's wedding...therefore it's your choice what type of cake it is. =)
For us, we may do cupcakes... With how my FMIL is acting lately and considering that she had the connection to a free cake for us, I've decided to look at alternatives for our wedding cake. When I brought up the idea of making our own cake, future hubs frowned... But he did like my idea of getting cupcakes from a local bakery where he applied to work until starting school. It's called dozens cupcakes and their cupcake wedding set-ups are so cute!
Omg...I feel a cupcake craving coming on....! They look so delicious!! :D
We are planning to do mini cupcakes for our wedding. I am not a huge fan of wedding cake (it usually just isn't that good). I don't think it is tacky at all (and we are having a somewhat fancy outdoor wedding). I think it it is better cause you can get multiple flavors, and people can try more than one. I would be so happy if everyone did away with wedding cake and went with wedding cupcakes instead!
Definitely not tacky! We're going to do cupcakes as well. I'm not sure if there is Gigi's near you, but they have great flavors. And, if you are planning to DIY...maybe you can get some ideas from their menu.
@Labrat
Dozen is where my fiance and I are getting our cupcakes for our wedding :) We decided on mini cupcakes so that they guests can have a variety of flavors, plus their normal cupcake size is HUGE! We had went for a tasting and there were 4 of us and we couldnt finish the cupcakes :-P!
I love their style and think they will fit perfectly with our wedding!!
That cupcake setup is so cute!!! :) I love the idea of the mini cupcakes! I didn't even think about the fact that you could have so many flavors!
@rplatzer is spot on! If it's good enough for Martha, it's good enough for me! Same justification I'm using for doing envelope wraps instead of hand writting each address on the invitation.
And as for it being tacky, that just doesn't make any sense to me. Cake and cupcakes are the same thing, so how can one be tacky and the other not? You can eat anything with your hands, and you can eat anything with a plate and a fork, so just make sure dessert forks and plates are available for those who want them, and you'll be fine. Honestly, though, some foods are meant to be eaten with your hands, and it's still considered perfectly elegant - like butler passed hors d'oeuvres at black tie affairs. Or would the ILs consider those "tacky" too? I think cupcakes are a really fun idea and you should go for it!

So I'm trying to decide what to do about our "Cake"..
We are having about 200 guests and can't afford to spend the 400-600 dollars on a classic wedding cake. My mom has made wedding cakes before, but she doesn't have the time to commit to making ours (she is currently taking college classes).
She did say that if we decided to do cupcakes she would be able to do those. I really think the idea of cupcakes is cute. I mean our wedding isn't very formal, we are having and outdoor ceremony, and we would still have a small two tier cake to do the formal cutting of the cake.
My MIL and SIL think that it would be tacky and that some people don't want cupcakes because they will have to eat it with their hands. I personally don't see how you couldn't just eat it with a fork. They are both very opinionated and can be pushy..
I was thinking of something along these lines.
I just don't know what to do, is it tacky? I don't think so, but I can't help but second guess myself.
