I don’t have a custom dress, but I do have a dress I purchased directly from another bride, so I don’t have a bridal store to go to.

The dress is NWT and unaltered, so I need at least a hem, bustle, and press. I plan to go to an independent seamstress that specializes in bridal and formalwear in my area, I found her via reviews online.

Yes! I want to know this as well. If my alterations turn out to be minor closer to the date, I will do them myself… I’m actually quite good at minor alterations and close work (beading, embroidery etc)… it’s just that I really suck at things like pattern cutting, so my larger projects always look terrible.

If, on the other hand, I need something a bit more major, I’m a bit stuck. Considering going to Debenhams because they do a wedding dress alterations in store. Assuming they also do it for outside dresses!

I’ve been wondering the same thing!

Once I receive my gown, if the alterations are really really minor I have a local seamstress I think can handle it. If more elaborate alternations are needed, I’m definitely going to have to find an independent seamstress who specializes in bridal gowns. Curious to hear what other bees have done.

I am getting a Jasmine’s dress too, and I am also losing a bunch of weight. So, by the time it gets to me, it will probably need to be altered.

I have been searching Yelp for “bridal alterations”, and maybe it’s because I live in a major city (Los Angeles), but there are TONS of people. From tailor shops that have real storefronts to women that work out of their homes.

I say, start searching your area now. Whatever you do, DO NOT take it to a dry cleaner/alternations place. My friend did that and they ruined her dress. She had to go to Davids Bridal the week before her wedding and buy a clearance dress off the rack!

@NaijaPuertoDorian:  Being in Australia, I cannot actually recomment an actual place, but this is the process I adopted:

Went to a couple of local bridal places and told them that my daughter’s dress was a gift from her family overseas (bit of a white lie).  Here in Australia they get annoyed if you buy a dress ‘on line’ or ‘internet dress’ and the bridal shops wont even talk to you if you told them it was bought on line.  This was the reaction I got when I first tried to find a seamstress capable of making the alterations.

After speaking to a few bridal shops, one lady’s name came up a few times.  I got her number and called her.  She is an independent seamstress who does work for a number of stores in our city.  She was happy to take on the work, but still gave me a hard time about ‘internet dresses’.

Because she specialises in bridal dresses she also has a steamer.  Don’t go to a regular laundry, too dangerous.

my friend bought her wedding dress online from 7foxmall.com. and the dress need some minor alteration. she just ask around and said she bought the dress from someone else, bridal shop is too expensive for alteration, so she took her dress to a professional seamstress (alteration shop) who is willing to do it at a cheaper rate.

@babecake:  Sorry not Victoria.  I am in Canberra.  But just ask a few bridal shops, they know who is around.

I did the same with hairdressers – asked them if they knew of any good ones.  Then got directed to this amazing woman who does the models for bridal photoshoots.  Wedding is in Sydney.
