Hey Bees! More advice needed... gah, this is all coming up so quick!

I'm going to order my FI a groom's cake as a surprise, and use it as part of the dessert for the rehearsal dinner. It's looking like the RD will have plenty of filling food - smoke house BBQ and sides, beer, and probably an array of cookies and desserts, based on how we usually do things.

So I'm scoping out bakeries, but what I'm not sure is how big I should get them to make the cake. I'm angling for a 3D design, which can be $6.50+ pp... actually, what I really want is something like this DiscWorld cake, but I would also go for a giant strip of bacon, or a stack of the books we both like. I'm not sure yet.

We'll probably have 30-40 people at the RD. Should I size the custom cake to feed everyone?  I know for weddings, there's the sheet-cake trick, but this will be at a home and harder to "whisk away". Or maybe we could do a small 3D cake, and a small sheet cake, in addition to the cookies, etc.

    Thoughts?  Thanks!

Wow, you are looking at an additional $300 for this cake.  Is that really how much you want to spend?  And $6 a cake is really expensive even compared to the expensive cake standards here.  Could you do a photo cake instead?  For my fiance's birthday I mocked a photo of him onto Phil Dahlhausser's body(beach volleyball player) and had it printed on the cake.  Everyone loved it!  Thinking of doing the same as a surpise at our RD and the bonus is that it should only run around $40.

Well, the expense is why I'm debating the size. That, and the fact that other desserts will be present.

And yes, $6.50/serving is more than our cupcakes will be at the reception!

You know, looking into this more.... I might be able to do something that will work myself. Time for a trial run!

Hi Atalante.... do you have a hobby lobby by where you live? You might be able to utilize their baking section. They have easy first-timer fondant kits (and other pre-made fondant for those who have used it before). Gel and powder dyed, tons of cool shaped baking tins....I think it's a much better idea for you to make it yourself (if possible). I know that you'll have a million things on your plate when that time comes but if you enjoy baking, it might be a good stress reliever! (Also, if you work with a cake that's a pretty generic shape and have some helpers, it shouldn't be hard at all). I think it would be a lot to pay all that for an RD cake...let us know what you decide!

@cmvmph: Thanks for the tip! I was looking for those things online, I didn't even think to check out Hobby Lobby (land of the amazing 40% off coupon).

I am going to try it. I know that making a stacked/shaped cake is WAY different than normal cake making, but I found a bunch of tutorials and enough information that I should at least be able to take a stab at it. I'll give it a try on one of the next few weekends at my mom's house (where I can casually unload the leftovers on my unsuspecting family) and let you know how it goes. Laughing

@atalante: You have actually inspired me to make my groom's cake too! I think it would be too much to ask someone to make the cake that I want, and I think if I practice a couple times, that it would be completely doable to make.

I wonder how much in advance you can make a cake - that's probably a weird question but I'm more concerned with the fondant (can you do the fondant cutouts like a week in advance?) If you find any tutorials about that online or info, please share! And good luck :)
