@lizzarda:  Hi there, I’m a Sydney bee and had my ering made in Sydney.

I did a lot of research online and in Sydney stores before purchasing a diamond online from the US and then having it set by a local jeweller. The diamonds that were available in Sydney stores were horribly overpriced and not great quality. (I looked at some chain stores like Michael Hill jewellers, Gregory Jewellers etc as well as some exclusive boutique jewellers in the CBD).

I bought my diamond from James Allen in the US and highly recommend them. Really compettive diamond prices and good customer service. I have also heard great things about Blue Nile, Union Diamond and Adiamor as online diamond vendors. I was even going to buy my ring from James Allen, but in the end i decided against it as I wanted to be able to try the ring on to see what it looked like on my hand.

A local jeweller had a ring I really liked and set the diamond I purchased. the cost to set the diamond was a lot more than i had expected though! ($700 just to set the diamond, i think I got ripped off!!)

Here is my ring and wedding band:

@becleeham:  Beauty!!!!!! 🙂 Agree, the diamonds here aren’t great quality and are overpriced – but I think it depends where you look. Some bees have found some beautiful rings, but my SO couldn’t, so we went with Blue Nile. 🙂

$700 to set a diamond? That is TERRIBLE! Fortunately the result is beautiful, but still!

@Olivepepper:  Dont I know it!! I did a lot of research on diamonds but not enough on jewellers…. I should have gone to a few more jewellers before settling on the ring I did. How much does it cost to set a gemstone in a ring in the US? No more than $200 right?

@lizzarda:  I would never buy retail again, our jeweller in Castlereagh St is amazing!

Look up Sam Rahme, or Affinity Diamonds on Facebook. he is extremely lovely and has amazingly beautiful jewellery. I’m not posting my ring  here or pricing- my fiancé wouldn’t appreciate it, but let’s just say my diamond ring was valued independently by another valuer and it is worth 3x more than what he paid. I also have my ring cleaned and rhodium plated(white gold) at no charge for the life of my ring 🙂 All I do is drop it in, go shopping for a few hours and come back to pick it up- truly a post-purchase service and care.

We are actually in the  process of finalizing our wedding ring designs too with them!

Good luck!

Ferl free to PM me of you have any questions.

@lizzarda:  how much is the budget if you don’t mind me asking? If your budget is larger, I love  te rings by Natalie Barney who has a store in Sydney. Her gemstone engagement rings are just breathtaking but everything is priced $5000 plus for engagement rings

We bought my center stone through the Diamond Emporium in the CBD and it actually worked out cheaper than buying the exact stone from James Allen.
Lots of diamonds merchants “stock” the same stone and by checking all the Aus wholesalers I was able to find it cheaper, which the Diamond Emporium matched.

Gus was a pleasure to work with, and I wish he could have made my ring but I wanted it made locally (we are not from Syd) for convenience sake.

My sister’s ring is from King Street Design and is amazing but quite expensive for the work.

i don’t have my ring/s yet but we went to MoiMoi in the CBD and for a platinum 1 carat bezel it’s about $2k and for a plain platinum band $1k+ so just about $3k – $4k give or take. Extremely happy with Moimoi & Steven or Steve the owner is a great guy to talk to.
