I am not personally aware of the quality of these dresses from the dress shops on ebay/craigslist. And I think that oline shopping is fine for ordering a dress from a reputable retailer for designers which you are familiar.
But I am getting my dress custom made. And I cannot imagine not having personal face to face contact with a designer/seamstress who would be making something so important. Having that personal point of reference was necessary in making sure we were on the same page, taking proper measurements and even fabric selection. I am now very comfortable that I am getting exactly what I want.
I fell in love with a Jim Hjelm dress but wasn't willing to pay almost 5k for it. I'm having a seamstress make the dress but tailor it more to fit me. I would be wary of having the ebay or craigslist people do it though. You don't get to see the quality of the fabric you're getting.
I ordered my dress from 1koo.com which used to be an ebay seller. The dress is beautiful, and exactly what I wanted. The material isn't silk, but it's very nice, and not cheap looking at all (Think David's Bridal quality fabric) It cost about 10% of what it would have to buy the designer version, and the designer one didn't have the corset back that I wanted, so it worked out for me. Everyone was so impressed by the quality, fit and price of my dress that we ordered all my bridesmaids dresses, mother of the bride, and groom dresses, flower girl dresses, a rehearsal dress for me, and a reception dress for me (destination wedding with reception back home). We have received the bridesmaids dresses and the mothers' dresses, and they all fit like gloves and are made much better than anything I have seen in the bridal stores for double the price. I would definitely recommend 1koo for any dresses that you want to order...they have alot of dresses already on their site, but will make whatever you want...just send them a picture. If you message me, I can send you some pictures of some of the dresses we got.

Hi wedding bee-rs...has any one of you lovely brides tried the ebay/craigslist custom made dress shops where they basically copy the wedding dress design you want? It seems super cheap to get a replica dress of your favorite dress designer (Jim Hjelm in my case) but the question is...is it going to look super cheap and ugly?
