Well, based on what I think a deposit is, I’m thinking you might not get it back.  It will basically serve as a payment to the jeweler for the work/time he put in on the designs, even if in the end you didn’t want it.  It was time he could have spent working on jobs that have already been paid in full, so he probably won’t let you get away with leaving him empty handed.

Did you give him any pictures or are you just trying to describe it to him with words?  If you haven’t given him any photos, get a few together and show them to him.  If you did show him pictures and he’s still not getting it right….well, you might have to just wait until he comes up with what you want if you don’t want to lose the deposit.  🙁

Soloman Brothers here in Atlanta is amazing.  Get your money back from that fruitloop and take your business elsewhere!

this is my nightmare. I’d definitely just nip it in the bud and either tell him that you don’t think that what you want is coming to fruition (maybe it’s just a communication thing) but if you are really just done with this guy, then move on (even if you lose your deposit).

definitely don’t finish the project with him! sounds like you’re willing to give up the deposit. go to someone with experience, and who has lots of good reviews.

My FI did my ring custom long distance, we just did our bands, and our neighbors used our jeweler for her engagement ring.  I’d be happy to share details with you, just PM me and I can answer any questions.  We went with a jeweler in Boston, and we live in DC.  But he has been doing jewelry for my family for years and years.

@MalteseMama: What state are you in?  I know a few places in California.
