So, I am on a very tight budget and my dress… well lets say I can’t spend over $600.00 (Hopefully) I fell in love with the dress that Kristen Bell wore in “When in Rome” and of course it is about $3,000ish.. haha that is as much as our wedding budget itself. But I have heard of some people getting custom wedding dresses and it is not as much as if it was a designer. Has anyone done this or know where to do it for fairly cheap in Southern California??

From what I’ve heard, having a dress custom made is almost always less expensive than ordering it from the designer. I’m guessing southern California has several culturally diverse neighborhoods – it should be pretty easy to find a self-employed seamstress who can make your dress for you. Sorry I can’t help you more than that. 🙁

I know that I contacted Whirling Turban to see about them making a dress custom for me and they were in the $1k to $1500 range, depending on fabric choice.

I ordered mine from jeffliu8800-aka April Bridal Co LTD on ebay. They are in China. I ordered a knock off of a $1000 Mary’s bridal gown for $299, custom size and design. Haven’t received my dress yet but have heard awesome things about them (more than 4000 positive feedback), they were even recommended in the Bridal Bargains Book. That dress looks easy enough that i would chance it-it wouls probably be $189 including shipping.
As for dress makers stateside can’t really help you-sorry! If you do order from jeffliu they have a money-back guarantee, so you can’t really lose. Good luck!
Heres a pic of my gown-getting it in a brighter red with black embroidery though.

It really depends on how difficult it is to make your dress. Mine was very simple and I had it made for less than $300 including materials and I got to have it in silk rather than polyester. I just searched for local seamstresses and found a wonderful lady who works out of her house. I did contact several different seamstresses with the same inspiration pictures first and they all quoted me in the same range. That made me feel pretty secure that I wasn’t being ripped off.
