Just to add onto this...I'm a Canadian bride as well and have an unfortunate online shopping addiction :) Through said addiction I've learned to never, ever buy from a store/company that ships using UPS. UPS charges the most ridiculous brokerage fees of any shipping company and once you add taxes and duty on top of that you're usually looking at about 50% of the cost of the item you purchased (I can't believe they are allowed to get away with this!!).
So, your best bet is to ship through a store/company that uses USPS or, if possible, ship the items to a friend in the U.S. and then have them ship to you.
has anyone ordered from Netbride and had to deal with this? On their site it says they take care of brokers fees, but I want to make sure before I go an order something that's going to cost me an extra $200 in broker fees.

So true! I ordered some cookbooks from Cuisine at Home a couple months ago, and when they FINALLY showed up I had to pay $7 in customs fees. So stupid, it was $25 in merchandise.
I bought my dress off another bride from Michigan. She shipped using USPS and it was great. Came right to my door and there were no additional fees.
Definately something to think about when buying from the US.
Don't forget that even if a shop takes care of brokerage fees, you may still end up paying the taxes on anything imported {not actually customs fees, but provincial and sometimes federal taxes}. I import a lot and often get packages slip through if they're under $50, but you're supposed to pay taxes on anything $20 and up.

Hi Ladies,
This is just to give all those Canadian Brides out there a heads up on ordering things from the States. I ordered my wedding invitations and it was working out to be a great price, $2 each plus shipping ($25 and taxes). So I figured that's not bad. Well UPS delivered my package today asking for $87.90 on top of what I had already paid. That is the charge customs put on the package for it to make it's way over the border. Had I known it was going to be that expensive I would have researched a bit more in my local area. Lesson learned.
