So, on Saturday I had my first appointment at what I'm really hoping will be our reception location. As my guy had to work my FMIL (who is a total sweetie) came with me to check things out.
After a tour of the location we sat down with the event coordinator and started talking details. All three of us were happily discussing dates, times, types of receptions and so on but when we got to food ideas my FMIL was really quiet. I didn't think much of it - I have no problem taking the lead in a conversation and so I just kind of carried on. We discussed a cocktail style reception and narrowed down what the guy and I were really going for - yes to crudites and Caprese salad, no to a raw bar and steak tartar, maybe on clams Casino, probably not on oysters Rockefeller, so on and so forth.
As the coordinator and I were winding down I asked my FMIL what she thought and if I'd missed anything she could think of. She leaned forward a bit and said, rather quietly and nervously, "Well, I think a vegetable tray would be good, and B. really likes that tomato and mozzerella stuff you make."
The coordinator was a second faster than me and said, "Oh, we can definately accomodate that - not a problem at all. The veggies are the crudite and the "fancy" name for tomatoes and mozzerella is Caprese salad - both of which I have on the list."
"Oh," said FMIL, "I heard you say those things but I didn't want to sound silly saying that I didn't know what they were."
I had a moment where I went back and forth between laughing and feeling really bad - luckily I controlled myself and just went back through explaining what things were. She's so sweet - and now I know that when she gets quiet I may need to slow down and make sure we're on the same page!
