@Love_That_Never_Ends:  I just got engaged two weeks ago.  My mother is obsessed with all things christmas and collects personal ornaments (we have ornaments for every sport we played/ shows we watched/ hobbies/ etc).  So my FI and I bought an ornament with one snowman proposing to his snow lady that said engaged, the date, and had our names on it.  I told her I saw an ornament she would love while on vacation and gave it to her to open.  She read it and said “Engaged?!” then I slipped my ring on and showed her.  Her and my dad were both super happy and thought it was a cute idea.

FYI  do not wear your ring before you tell them.  I took mine off just in case, but I figured they wouldn’t really notice if it was on, but my mom literally glanced at my ring finger before she even said hi to me…………..apparently she thought it might be happening soon haha.   Anyways I’m glad I did not have it on because it definitely would’ve ruined the surprise.

When we told my FI’s parents we just bought a cake and wrote, “We’re engaged!”   Less cute, but they still liked it.

So I would reccomend trying to think of something your parents like and incorporating it somehow. Good Luck!

@almostwebbee:  That’s such a cute idea! My mom loves Christmas too!

@Love_That_Never_Ends:  My FI asked my (entire) family’s permission. He had the ring with him on mother’s day, and tried to get my grandfather alone so he could ask. My dad passed away a year ago, so it was really important he ask the patriarch of the family for his permission. Well needless to say, my grandma, my mom, my aunts, my cousins, EVERYONE was in the room when he pulled out the ring to show my grandpa after he of course gave his blessing. So everyone had seen the ring but me! Then FI waited another 2 months to actually propose because he had this whole thing planned for my birthday. Needless to say I called my mom first and then my grandparents second!

Good luck and congrats on your upcoming engagement!

When we got engaged we were going over to my mom’s for Christmas dinner. I told her we’d bring the dessert, and brought a cake that said, “We’re Engaged!” I couldn’t wait for dessert for them to find out, so I told her I tripped up the stairs and I think I ruined the cake.  She opened it up to see if it was alright, but couldn’t read it because she didn’t have her glasses on. Her partner went over and just shook his head at her as he had to read the message to her…hahaha she was thrilled!!!

@Love_That_Never_Ends:  Glad I could help!

@FutureDrAtkins:  Thanks!  I think it’s so nice that your FI asked everyone, that’s really sweet!

@Songbird29:  LOL that is such a funny story!  My FI’s mom also needed to get glasses to read our cake

We were lucky and ours was videotaped. We got engaged on the CN Tower Edgewalk, so we bought the DVD after. We went to our parents houses and asked them if they wanted to see the video from the Edgewalk….then they just watched the proposal happen 🙂

The picture idea sounds great! If there are any pics of the actual proposal you could put that in a frame and give it to them.

Love the ornament idea too!
