So I feel like I’m doing everything I can to lose weight but I still wake up feeling bloated as hell and I don’t get it.
I don’t eat that much salt and the only thing I can think of is the wine. I’m pretty active and although I feel myself toning and firming up, I’m still also feeling bloated. I have a glass of wine proably 3x a week and I’m wondering if that has anything to do with my results. Has anyone done this and succeeeded? I would love to hear firsthand accounts of nixing alcohol to lose stubborn fat. Please help me out here!

I’ve done it. It definitely works. When I wasn’t drinking I lost 10 lbs. Now that I am drinking again, even though I still work out and eat healthy, I can’t seem to lose any weight at all. ::crying::

catpeaches: I’m doing the same thing as you, though I drank a ot more than you did.
Cutting out alcohol should certainly help with bloating/water weight, but that small of an amount per week is unlikely to affect your fat loss, much (directly). I do think, however, that studies show that alcohol either before or after a workout negatively affects your results (I think it was before). So if you are doing the gym thing, you may see a bigger difference than me (I don’t work out, I’m just watching what I eat/drink).
I’ve been off alcohol about a week and I’ve lost a pound, though as I said I drank way more than you. Every little bit helps!

Yep, alcohol is unfortunately the cause of many an ineffective diet. (Says me as I put my spinach salad in the fridge and go out to meet FI at a bar haha)

geneva2: haha nice.
gingerkitten: how much were you drinking? i’m 5’3.5 and one glass of wine is enough to get me tipsy. i also read that when you’re shorter it’s harder and takes longer to lose weight or see results 🙁

I know men are different than women with weight loss but my husband stopped drinking and lost 30 pounds, he took up walking a little too but kept his diet otherwise the same so for him it worked.

I would also cut dairy and wheat and added sugar for a week – see how you feel. You absolutely will lose weight.
You can bring them back in once or twice weekly treat form, but keep them out of your regular rotations.

I’ve given up alcohol during the week to help lose weight, but that didn’t help with the bloat very much. What REALLY made a difference was increasing my protein and eating clean. I’m NOT saying low-carb or paleo. Just increasing my protein to around 100g a day (I’m a vegetarian, so no easy feat!) really helped. Clean food (not processed) really helped with the bloat too. Good luck!

The way you worded your post, it seems like you’re not trying to drop weight so much as get rid of the bloat? If that’s the case, no need to cut out booze now. Just stop eating all starches / sugars / carbs (yes, even fruit!) for a week before your wedding, and you’ll drop anywhere from three to seven pounds of water weight. You will be the last thing from bloated on the big day!
If you’re actually trying to lose weight, yep, alcohol is the first thing you should cut. Empty, delicious calories. 🙂 And the body burns alcohol before fat, every time, so if you’re on a diet, drinking is like shooting yourself in the foot.

catpeaches: Hmmm, this is going to make me sound like an alcoholic. I just have a high tolerance. I’m 5’9″/130lbs and I was drinking about 4 nights a week, 3-4 drinks per night. Part of the reason I quit is because that much can’t be healthy for me!
I’ve also seen a change in my mood and energy levels. I feel brighter, happier, more energized. I was previously feeling sluggish and depressed, so I’m quite pleased with the change (and loss of water weight! I had a little belly).

Yup. I quit drinking & dropped 20 lbs. I stay away from the stuff now to maintain at 119 lbs. Alcohol definitely puts weight on me.

I have to cut back on drinking to lose weight. My willpower goes out the window when I have had even just a couple.

What works for me is cutting out wine/any alochol Monday-Friday. I can enjoy wine over the weekend with my friends and fiance and still lose weight. I lost a lot of weight just by cutting wine out of the workweek.

gingerkitten: How much weight did you lose and how much time after stopping. My wedding is in 23 days and I def need to lose a few

Please don’t just cut out food groups, for the sake of losing weight…. first off are you drinking enough water??? That is the most important, even when trying to lose a couple extra pounds. If you cut out food groups a week before the wedding and then eating them on your wedding day/night you will bloat like crazy. Make sure your eating enough healthy fats (nuts, avocado, nut butters, fish oils, egg yolks, etc) next please don’t be afraid of carbs!! They are your friend, just make sure it’s something like complex carbs such as yams, brown rice, sprouted grain breads etc. eat lots of fruit and veggies. You can cut out added artificial sugars, this will help a lot!!
Also Stress can cause bloating and if you are stressed try to reduce it and that can really help too!!!
