Just looking for some advice, upon getting my sapphire home and away from the bright lights of the jewellers I happened to notice a lot of “background” showing through my sapphire, it looks like a slit through the middle of the sapphire and anything I put behind it shows through clearly, like inside the sapphire the stone separates (hard to explain..) there’s no tinged pink through the centre, it’s like a hole in the centre. I’ve tried to capture it, to show you but as you can imagine it’s quite difficult to get on photo.
As I say, I didn’t notice this in the shop, but I did as soon as I got home, what do you think guys? Is it faulty or is this how it should be?

I’m no sapphire expert, so I could be wrong on this, but I think what you’re describing’s called “windowing”.

@abirdword: I say windowing too.

Yup, sounds like windowing though a picture would clarify this.
A significant window occurs when a stone is cut too shallow A big obvious window would bother me a lot. You may want to look at a recut by a reputable cutter if it bothers you. The folks on the Colored Stones forum at Pricescope can help you out with this!

For some reason it won’t let me post it 🙁 well it’s only a small sapphire anyway, so I couldn’t have it recut. It does bother me a little yes, does it devalue it in any way? Am I able to take it back for this reason?
