We loved it! We took six private and six group classes before our wedding and had a ball. DH is good at everything, so it was fun for me to have the upper hand at something for once :) Be prepared to feel a little silly and go in with the mindset that it's all about fun! We really did enjoy have those date nights because it was so far out of comfort zone but still awesome.
@NDBee: Wow that sounds like a great deal!
We were going to do lessons, then I broke my arm so we decided not to, then 1 month before the wedding we decided we did! We only did 2 1hour lessons as it was the time right before Christmas and learnt a very basic Rumba that went with our song.
It was my idea but FI loved it, and with 4 days to go to our wedding, it is him suggesting we practice for half an hour each day!
I so can't wait to do it with him for real, and I love the time we spend together just practicing. We haven't told anyone so it should be a surprise on the day!
We've always taken dance lessons together and we absolutely LOVE it! I must admit though, it took us about 4 months to get "good" enough for a dance. When you start out, it's rather slow.
We spend a small fortune on dance lessons, but to us it's worth it! We just started to tango recently (it's a harder dance) and it's soo much fun!
If you have any specific questions about dance classes you can ask me. We weren't particularly good dancers when we started and we're very, very good now.
@PinkMagnolia: Do you know if most places will let you bring a song in and tell you what basic dance would go well with it? I don't want something with custom choreography b/c FI and I are not coordinated enough for that, but I'd love to learn a dance with some basic steps so that it's not just us swaying for 2 minutes straight lol.
@jocember yes. Most good instructors will know the song if you give them the title, but all should be able to tell you by listening to your song. What song is it? Part of our dance lessons teach us how to tell what dance to dance to each song, so I might be able to tell you.
We didn't do a choreographed song either. We figured we'd forget the steps or something, but we did know a great deal of advanced steps to our dance (a foxtrot) so it looked choreographed.
@Ms. Gremmlin: Hehe, that's what I told him. Don't expect to be awesome right away, babe, it's totally going to feel like a middle school dance at first - learning where to put your hands, how to move, etc. Hahah. Plust I'll have to learn to follow, not lead. I love dancing, and he's a newbie, so I'll have a practice in patience thrown in there for free. :-)
@nzgirl: I was SO glad to find them for that price. Otherwise it's $100/hour for a private session, but I figured we'd learn plenty in the group setting. Like @jocember: said, we're looking to avoid the 2 minute sway...anything that's beyond that is icing on the cake. Lol. Funny about your arm (not haha, but coincidentally) Mr.ND actually is in an immobilizer right now, so our first session may have his left arm stuck to his body.
@PinkMagnolia: I'm hoping when we live together we'll be able to take some more classes (we live 80 miles apart while I finish school). Do you think it is best to have our song picked out first, or to go and take lessons and then figure out our song? We haven't decided one yet, but maybe we should get on that. I know they teach us a set dance each of the 4 sessions, so we'll learn 4 dances, but maybe the instructor can tell us which is best for our song.
@PinkMagnolia: I'd love for most instructors to know the song, but chances are they won't. It's called "Never Let Me Go" by Florence + The Machine, you can likely find it on youtube to take a listen. If you have suggestions on dances, that would be awesome! I've got enough rythym to theoretically watch steps for dances online and get the hang of it, so we could brush up before spending $ on lessons hehe.
@NDBee We had taken lessons for about a year before our wedding. We first decided that we loved foxtrot the most and we wanted a song to match that. The song wasn't near as important to us as the dance. My instructor gave us lists of songs that he thought matched our personalities and all. I think some people do start with a favorite song of theirs, but sometimes songs that you really like aren't going to highlight the way you dance best.
@jocember I would suggest you don't learn steps on your own. If you learn it the wrong way, it's really hard to relearn. My instructor likes it if you've had no formal training. He told us if you're a hiphop-backup dancer or a ballerina, he normally can't teach them anything because they're so used to dancing one way and they're no good at partner dances.
We took lessons. My parents actually started it. They started taking lessons as something to do together since my dad had recently retired. My dad then called and asked me if I would take a lesson with him for our dance. Of course I said yes! My husband was then like, "well, if he's taking lessons then we have to take lessons." We took three private lessons a few weeks before our wedding. My husband really enjoyed them. He's just an athlete that he enjoyed learning and perfecting the techniques. After the first lesson he said he wanted to take more to learn other dances. So, long story short, highly recommend taking a few lessons!
we're taking dance lessons right now. We talked about it lots and always wanted to do it but didn't have the money until his aunt and uncle offered to pay as our wedding gift. They paid for 10 sessions in total, and we're loving it... although we aren't very good haha!
I'm not sure where you are from, but I live in Dallas, Tx. There is a website called salsadallas.com, and it lists all the local salsa clubs as well as the instructors they have throughout the metroplex. You can go try out basic lessons for free, get a feel for the instructor, and see if you like them. Also, it's good to start out with the basics if you have never danced before, and instead of wasting your money learning the basics, you can do it for free by finding an instructor at one of your local area clubs! Then, once you master the basics, you can purchase some intermediate classes, and get more for your money!
However, $100 for 4 classes is an awesome price. I am a salsa dance instructor, and I charge $75 per class for private lessons!
Good Luck!

I just signed Mr.ND and I up for dance lessons :-) And it was his idea! I'd mentioned it over a year ago, but never brought it up again, and the other day he asked when our lessons are...silly boy. So I checked out the local dance options and found group ballroom dance sessions that are capped enrollment. Four 75 minute sessions for $100. I thought that was pretty reasonable, and I'm really looking forward to dancing with Mr.ND (or helping him learn to dance, rather) and just spending time on a fun date night once a week for a month.
Have any other bees taken dance classes/lessons? How were they? Any tips or tricks? I can't wait!
