hey, i'm actually thinking of doing the same thing =)! we're having a daytime lunch reception that's shorter than your usual evening affair so we want to provide a dancing alternative that would be fun for our guests! i think you know your guests better than any of us would...so if you think the majority of them would be into it, go for it. for us, we think there are enough people at the wedding who would actually participate that makes it a worthwhile idea to include.
We're doing the same thing! We're having two DI's (dance instructors) come and liven up our dance floor a bit! Its not strange at all, they actually get more people to dance...people who are usually wallflowers or don't dance will actually get up and dance! I've been to two weddings that had this idea and I have to say, they were super fun weddings!
My sister-in-law did this at her wedding and it was a BIG hit, very popular with the guests. It was a great ice-breaker and definitely a great way to get people out and comfortable on the dance floor. They taught the dance lesson towards the end of the cocktail hour and before dinner so it also gave the bride and groom a few extra minutes alone/take pictures when they wouldn't really be missing anyone. If you're in the DC area I can give you the contact for the Dance Instructors (they have a DJ business and they also offer the dance instruction as a service), they also teach with Gotta Swing here in DC.
Yay! Thank you all so much for your encouragement! It makes me really excited!
We're already planning this. We're surprising our entire party with a swing dance as the first dance. After that we're going to keep with the swing music and have a brief instruction for our guests. It should be a blast.
I would LOVE to go to a wedding like that! I'm not into the dancing that goes on at most weddings, but I think I might even be able to get my FI on the dance floor for swing lessons ... maybe.
Thats an awesome idea since you have a theme to the music. My dj is also a dance instructor so he will be teaching a basic line dance (probably the electric slide) at my wedding to get everyone up and dancing.

Our wedding has a late 1940's theme, so we wanted the music to reflect it as well! I didn't want to have this theme, only to play rap and hip hop and the dance, you know? But then I was thinking that not everyone would know how to dance if we went with the big band swing, etc. So i had an idea. My mom knows a group of people who teach dance lessons, and I thought it'd be fun to have them come and teach amidst our dance!
I thought it'd be nice because it would make our wedding unique, but would it be too strange? I'm not sure how many people would be open to it.
Tell me what you think!
