I’m with you.. my DB experiance wasn’t all that great, although.. I only wanted to try on ballgown type dresses.. my assistant did have me try on A-lines as well, which I didn’t mind.

There is only 1 dress shop in my area.. and it’s DB. Their selection was horrible. I tried on maybe 5 dresses.. and only 1 of the dress I actually came in to try on. There was gorgeous VW dress I wanted to try on, but I was told that they do not carry samples for “larger” women and if I wanted to try it on, i’d have to order it.

No thanks.

Sorry you had such a bad experiance, go somewhere else if there is an area near you!

@Irish2014:  I’m so sorry to hear that you had a bad experience!  I got my dress at DB, and measure there as a 20/22 but they had almost every dress in a size I could try on.  Maybe try a different DB?

Boo, that does suck!  I’m the same size and had much more luck.  Maybe try other bridal shops?  I was underwhelmed with Davids Bridal in general (and I ended up buying a $500 dress, so it’s not like I was doing luxury shopping or something).

We went yesterday too.  I went with my sister and my mum.  We were initially looking for bridesmaid dresses (and found them).  On a whim my mum tried on dresses and found her MOB dress too!  Awesome.  So they talked me into trying dresses.  Holy.  Awful.  I knew I’d have to go up from my usual size 10.  But to an 18?  And the only measurement that was causing the problem was my bust.  Everything else was sooooo big.  Too much fabric, made me feel super frumpy.  And the sales girl didn’t listen (or they didn’t have) to the styles I wanted.  I wanted to cry, and not tears of joy.

I’m in a much better place today about it.  The dresses just weren’t the quality or fabrics I was looking for.  I’ll go in a month or so to one of the bridal boutiques around and try on some of the Maggies I’ve fallen in love with.

Though it did make me open up my options to different shapes, fabrics and styles.  So instead of being so focussed on one look with a few variations I’ve pinned a bunch of other styles that I will now consider.  And I really tried to figure out what it is about the dresses I’ve been pinning.  I think I know what it is that draws me to a dress.  So, in that light, it was a good experience.

It happens at the other end of the scale too- I’m a 0/2 and have not been able to try on even one dress in my size.

@Irish2014:  I was MOH for my friend and she had similar problems.  She did her homework and found a bridal salon that carried a lot of plus size samples.  We drove 2 hours to get there, each way… but she found her dress!

@marinewife4:  I wear a 38 band.  I do have a muscular back/shoulders, so it could have been that pulling on the dress or affecting the hooks there.  But that was actually the only place the 16 was too tight.  And the 16s, when pinned, had this ridiculous amount of excess fabric.

Also, I’m really tall (6’1).  So some of the torsos on the dresses were all wrong.  Like where the dress would flare to accomodate hips and bums is actually up around my abdomen (and I’m fairly straight through the bottom half) so there’s just fabric, everywhere!

@Irish2014:  I didn’t have a great experience either, my consultant had 3 other ladies with the same appt time, and refused to let me try on anything other than ball gown…. Yeah didn’t buy From them.
