The Wedding Bee's new Wiki feature has great info on DOCs:
http://wiki.weddingbee.com/Day_of_coordinator
Costs vary from region to region. We paid $500 for our DOC in Southern California.
make sure when you are looking to hire a DOC that you know their policy...i.e. do they charge an hourly rate, or do they charge a flat rate. This can be a big deal if you are at the end of your budget and you can only hire someone for four hours. You don't want to be walking down the aisle and have someone tell you their time is almost up.
They should be able to provide a detailed list of services they will provide for the amount they will charge.
I paid $1400 in NYC...but fees vary widely depending on what is included in the package.
Good luck!
great advice from mrs. corn. also, make sure that all of the duties of your DOC are detailed in the contract. my friend hired a DOC but didn't go through the contract - duties w/ a fine tooth comb and had to take care of setting up the personal items for her reception.
in terms of costs, they do vary across the board. if you're in the LA area, a fairly experienced / established DOC will average $2000-2500. good luck.
Thanks guys! Now that I've got the duties figured out, I'm mostly interested in costs. I've got $500 up to $2500. What did others pay?
We are paying around $1500 - right outside NYC. DOC rates we found were $700 to $3000+. The $700 person was totally unresponsive and so got booted from consideration. There were quite a few in the $1000-$1500 range which seemed great.
I do think it really depends on where you are located.
My costs for Coordinator and (1) assistant for a (10) hour day is 689.00 canadian inclusive
We are paying in the LA area 400$ plus vendor meal. She is very helpful and well organized. I am so glad to have her on board.
I'm getting married outside Kingston, NY (about 3-4 hour north of NYC). For coordination of rehearsal and day of, most of the quotes I got were right around $1000. There was one person who offered several different options (only ceremony, ceremony+reception, etc) a la carte and that way about $400-650 for the rehearsal, ceremony.
Some charged by the hour, others just a flat fee. Some charged for travel expenses, so be sure to factor that in.
I found a lot of people just from Googling my area and 'day of coordinator'. Some people put their prices online and can give you an idea specific to your area.
One coordinator typically charged starting at $1500. However, when I spoke to her about how much I actually needed from her (really just the rehearsal and day of- not help prior with vendors or anything) she dropped the price to $900 (partly because she really wanted to get her foot in the door at the venue I'm using).
So be prepared and be specific to get the best quote.
i'm in LA - paying $1500 for DOC
I live in NYC and my coordinator is costing me just under 4K for 3 weeks work. right before the wedding, she said i just give her all my contracts, and everything outstanding (out of town baskets, etc etc) she will take care of! I think it'll be WELL worth it!
Our DOC actually comes with the venue (country club). I was pretty excited to find that out. He is their event coordinator, and I knew that he would be doing the coordination of their staff, but it turns out he will handle coordinating all my vendors, set-up of all decor, setting out favors, getting presents loaded in cars, keeping everything on schedule, etc... everything that happens at the venue. He has actually been so much help with putting together the schedule and advice on vendors that I was ready to offer him extra to coordinate everything, or ask him who I should hire to work with him. This is sort of the deal of the century, because there is also actually no facility fee - just a catering and bar minimum to have the whole facility for the day.
I'm in Atlanta. Most started out at around $800. When we first booked ours (about 16 months ago), she was $500 because she was just starting out. Now she's $725.
Wish I'd seen this post before I started my own. I've been given quotes ranging from $1,500-3,000! That's not for NYC, that's not for LA, that's for Tucson!
Does anyone have any good recommendations for an affordable DOC in southern Arizona?
I am getting ready to sign a contract with a coordinator this week and while she is mostly doing DOC and Rehearsal, she is also going to help with a few other extras but is asking for $2500. All three coordinators I interviewed had the same price. While I know I'm not getting ripped off, it is still a little more than I was wanting to spend. I wondering what the etiquette is about negotiating with Coordinators...is this the one vendor you don't haggle with?
We are paying $4200 for a full-on "wedding planner" in Montana, who is taking care of all reservations, phone calls, contracts, rehearsal and day of. We contracted her a year out from our date and she is working with us the entire time.
Because we're getting married in the ass end of nowhere and working with non-standard vendors, she has been a lifesaver. It's hard to get in touch with people out there!
I'm paying $1000 for my DOC in DC. She's willing to show up at any time on the day of with an assistant is offering to do all kinds of extras such as pick up our alcohol, help print programs, put invitations together, etc. After the wedding, she is going to return flower-related things, tuxes, drop off gifts, etc.
I think everyone's skill, experience, and energy levels are different, so the price is going to vary on top of region. I don't recommend aggressive haggling (it's not really fun for anyone involved), but asking nicely has never bothered me. Just know that they can say no. I know what my resentment level is and chances are they will too.
I am also a consultant (although not a wedding coordinator) and I know that I simply have a standard rate. I might be willing to work for less than that rate if there are some serious benefits to the job - potential for follow-on work, new contacts, fabulous travel. But in general my rate is fair considering the work I do, it's competitive, it's what I need to make to support myself, and most clients are willing to pay it. I assume that if you talk to three or four DOCs, and they are all charging about the same, then that is the going rate. Somebody charging a lot less is not necessarily a good deal, as far as the level of service you will get - there has to be a reason that they're going cheap, and its usually not because they're overwhelmed with work, you know?
Thanks for the feedback! So the general consensus seems to be that haggling is a no go (I agree, its never fun!) I think what I've decided to do though is see if she will come on one or two final vendor meeting with me. AKPM2008 you are getting what seems like a deal! I am in Hampton Roads and will be paying double! Good find!
mine is $1500 in the los angeles area. At the time when I was doing research, I couldn't find anybody that was recommended for lower than that...
I was quoted $2499 from a DOC in the Bozeman, Montana area. My fiance thought she meant $24.99 an hour. Ha! Needless to say, we are NOT going with that DOC... we found someone to do more (takes over one week before) and only costs $700!!!
In atlanta there is a company, that is all they do is host events, including coordinating wedddings. Their day of wedding coordinating starts at $500 for under 200 people and they calling vendors to make sure they will be their a week before and stay after to collect your personal decorations you plan to keep.
Rachel Quigley (rachelequigley@gmail.com) did my wedding last month in NYC for $500 and she was FABULOUS. Babysat the flower girl, while coordinating all the vendors, seamlessly herding the guests from the ceremony to the reception, and then even fixed the cake when we had a last minute disaster! I felt like a guest at my own wedding.
DOC is not her full-time job, so she is flexible to meet in the evenings after work/on weekends and I cannot reccomend her enough. Her passion for weddings and organizational skills are contagious!
Good Luck on your big day!

Fellow Bees:
If you have one, how much are you paying your DOC (Day of Coordinator)? What exactly are her/his duties for that day?
Many Thanks!
