Hi, for those of you looking for a day-of coordinator or wedding planner who won't charge you an arm and a leg, for things you could do yourself, but don't want to considering it's your wedding day, I wanted to post my rave review of Marie Rhodes of Affaires of Splendor. After a long search for a DOC that does not try to make you pay for more than you need, or charge way too much to begin with, but who still performs her duties to a T, I found a small posting Marie made on this site. Boy was that a good find!
From the moment you speak to her, Marie is the consummate professional who takes the time to learn things about you, who the people involved in your wedding are, and the things that matter to you, no matter how small. Marie was extremely accomodating and available throughout the process. She met with us in Venice Beach on a Sunday, even though she works out of Riverside. Our wedding likewise was in Pacific Palisades, and she attended two meetings there, and another with our florist, all included in her DOC fee, without any fuss. She provided guidance when asked, always had sound views and suggestions, did not impose her will on us (a good thing, as I am very independent minded), and was courteous, calm, cool and collected at all times. And that is not to say that she is not warm or fun.
From the moment I hired Marie a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. I was fine choosing most things and vendors for myself but I did not want to be the point person on the day of, do all the set up on the big day, or be responsible for fixing last minute problems. Neither did I want to have to direct the rehearsal. And sometimes, while I have good friends and others to turn to for questions, I needed an industry pro to solve a dilemma. But I could not afford to spend thousands for this service, as my now husband and I were paying for our wedding ourselves. The rate she quoted me was thousands less than those I'd been referred to in Los Angeles had quoted me.
Incidentally, I met a woman whose daughter got married the day after I did, at the same venue. She did not hire an offsite DOC and she was not happy with the way her daughter's wedding turned out. They had a lot of issues arise during the wedding and everyone went to her and her daughter. She and her daughter were stressed out for a good portion of the wedding and she felt bad for her daughter. She hadn't hired an offsite DOC because she didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on one, having planned so much of the wedding herself. After I told her about Marie, she made sure she got her number from me - she has another daughter getting married soon.

I hate to come off like I'm sounding alarm bells, but if you don't hire a DOC or planner of Marie's caliber, you may really regret it!
