So I bought DB’s KP3221 (it’s a Gallina lace dress but the lace is a thick cottony type lace, so different from all the daintier, glitzier stuff out there). I was thinking I might have my seamstress add cap sleeves, because I’m still not 100% sold on the whole strapless dress thing (and esp because my BM’s dresses are not strapless), but I’d want to do it out of the same lace, since that’s really all the embellishment on the dress.
Does anyone know if David’s sells just pieces of the fabric? Corporate told me to contact my local store, but the local store told me no once before. I’m going to ask again, but I know there are bee’s out there who work/have worked for DB, so I’m hoping someone can give me a straight answer (or even maybe someone has done it before).
I was going to just use a piece from hemming, but the way it’s looking with my shoes and the crinoline, I don’t need any hemming, and I don’t want to chop the train off.

@pinkfrog: My mom got her MOB dress at DB, and they sold her a big square of purple fabric that matched the dress because she wanted to get a modesty panel sewn in. I don’t think it was the exact same material, but it looked almost exact. You can always ask! I unfortunately didn’t have that problem as I’m 4’11” and had a lot of extra fabric after it was hemmed…lol

The technical answer is that it depends on the gown, fabric, and designer. I bought a retired Oleg and was told I could most likely get the champagne fabric, but it ended up being a different color due to dye lots. FI Carnival wanted lace so she could make her sleeves 3/4 and was told no. The best answer I can give you is to try your store and if they say no, call another. Also, make sure you speak to a manager–they are literal fairy Godpeople and sometimes the consultants and alterations ladies don’t know all of the options available to you. I know you can’t get material for Vera, you can for Oleg, but I have no idea about Galina and what their contract says.
ETA: You can get the material and have the alterations done somewhere else. DB upcharges like no one’s business and the quality can be hit and miss depending on the seamstress.

I got my dress from DB…I was told by many brides that is was best to get alterations done elsewhere….something you may want to look into.

I was seriously considering one of DBs lace, strapless dresses, and I also wanted sleeves. They would not sell me extra fabric.
ETA: it was this dress, not in the Galina line

I’m *definitely* not getting alterations done there. They’re far too expensive, and honestly, I’m not 100% sure I trust them after hearing stories. I’ve already got another seamstress lined up.
Sounds like my best bet is to call a few stores and ask. There’s easily four or five DB’s within driving distance for me, so maybe I’ll get lucky. If I don’t get the lace it’s not the end of the world, but it’s worth a shot. Thanks all!

This may be too late, but I just found extra lace for my Galina gown on Etsy: Etsy Galina Lace
Might be worth a look?
