Quick question, that you would think I would have learned the answer at some point in my life, but I haven’t.
I want to make a time-sensitive online order, but my debit card expires at the end of the month and the bank hasn’t sent me a new one. If I buy this, but I need to return it, and the return doesn’t get processed until next month, can I get my money back on a different card?

@risingsun: You’ll get a new card. My bank is uncanny about the new one showing up a day or two before the old one expires. It’s safer to only have “2” cards for as short a time as possible. I would just make your purchase. Usually for a new debit card, the numbers are the same, just the expiration is updated.

@pharmy: is correct. The number stays the same, only the expiration date is updated.

you will be fine… the merchant would route the refund to your bank and the bank would have to manually credit your bank account. i used to work at a bank and i worked in a department that dealt with these scenarios 🙂

Even if the number didn’t stay the same, you should be able to get the money refunded. I had to change my card because of fraud and was able to return things on my new card by talking to the store associate.

I ended up talking my mom in to spotting me and I’ll pay her back so there’s no worries!
