Most of your planning would be done before the holidays anyhow since you have to secure everything so far in advance. The past 2 months for me have been slow in terms of wedding stuff. Aside from small things like fittings and hair trials etc.
As far as vendors go just our DJ was a bit more expensive since we are getting married on NYE. We didn't have any issues with any vendor we wanted being booked. I got engaged in March of 2011 and my wedding is 12/31/11 and I had no problems. If you select and book things soon you shouldn't have an issue.
Some of our family members who live in another country are not able to come because of the high price of flights during holiday time, but if we had a summer wedding the plane ticket price would've been just about the same, and we weren't going to pick a wedding date based off of plane ticket prices. (We picked our date because it is our 6th anniversary)
We booked our venue about 16 months in advance and had all our vendors locked in at least 12 months in advance. We are having problems scheduling our rehearsal time at our venue because the day before our wedding they are booked for lunch AND dinner events. Our venue only has one wedding a day, but will book multiple non wedding events in one day.
I feel since we booked so early we got great prices on all our vendors. We negotiated with every single vendor without any issues.
We're getting married right at the beginning of December, so there wasn't much of a vendor conflict with holiday parties. It is the weekend after Thanksgiving, but I don't really think it's affected our attendance at all. When we booked the date I didn't even realize it was the week after Thanksgiving, but now I'm glad--I'll have a few days off to take care of any last-minute things.
If you book everything pretty far in advance, you should be fine--very few holiday parties are booked a year ahead of time!

I'm trying to decide between a December and a January wedding.
For you December ladies, how have you been finding the stress of planning the wedding during the busy holiday season, especially right after Thanksgiving. How about guests, have they had issues with attendance? Did you run into problems with vendors being more pricy or already booked up due to Christmas parties?
