I’m just new to all this, as my partner and I got engaged at Christmas. We had always said that we wanted to get our own house first i.e. get on the property ladder. However, now with my having the ring and all, I don’t want to wait that long! I’ve been thinking maybe to plan the wedding for July 2016.. is it too soon now to start with the planning etc??!

LOL it’s never too soon but at the same time you need to shop around to get the best prices. You can start getting all your ideas together and start planning according to your budget by getting possible quotes and things but I would hold off just a little longer.
I feel you though! When I got engaged in 2012, I wanted to start planning right away but we got a house first too and I was still in school without a full time job so we waited a little longer. I just started planning early in 2013. It was good because I noticed price differences from 2012 to 2013/14. Some were cheaper as of late some were more expensive so research is a good plan and then when the time comes to officially plan, then at least you will feel a lot more prepared.
It helps to save money at this point too since you’re a couple years away from the wedding. One thing I noticed in the two years of being engaged was that I really didn’t properly prepare myself on how much everything costed. You think one thing will cost this then all of a sudden, the reality is that it costed something else.
