We are down to deciding between Club Velas Vallarta and Mayan Palace Marina – both in town Puerto Vallarta! Really our difficulty is in choosing whether or not to go all inclusive. I’ve done both and my fiancee has never done an AI trip.
We are both drinkers and love to socialize (even on our honeymoon I can’t see us being the types to hide away in our room!) My real heartburn with AI is that I’m always feeling like I could “get it cheaper” if I did it myself if I simply spent the two hours or so when we arrived hitting up Walmart by taxi and buying our liquor, beer and breakfast foods/snacks myself.
If you went through this dilemma, what did you decide and why? I’d love to hear from someone who has returned from their honeymoon with some feedback but all are welcome to chime in please!

So I’m trying to do this from memory because we stayed in Marina Vallarta a few months ago but from the outside from what I can remember is the club velas is much nicer looking. The only thing is the Marina is kinda it’s own little town but you’d still have to take a taxi into the main part of Puerto Vallarta.

I’m not concerned about location – My MOH jsut got backa nd said either is a short bus ride to town. Just whether to decide on all inclusive or not.

There’s lots of fun places to eat downtown so it depends what your plans are. If you plan mainly to stay on the beach then it might be worth it so you don’t have to pick up and leave and go find the bus or take a taxi or whatever everytime you want to eat. But if you plan to go downtown or on whale watching trips or whatever on multiple days so you’re already going to be out and about then it might it might not be worth it to do the AI.

I went to PV a few years ago and did not do all inclusive. However, this was a trip with some friends, not a honeymoon. We felt it would be boring to eat in our hotel for every meal and we really enjoyed exploring the town. There are some great restaurants downtown! We just asked the front desk what they recommended. I’m sure we saved money in the long run.
Now, we also didn’t stay in a 5 star beautiful resort that may have 5-6 restaurants so you may want to take that into consideration. We’re doing AI for our honeymoon in Punta Cana but that’s b/c we really can’t/don’t want to leave the resort. I feel that PV is a much safer place where you can roam the streets.
Hope that helps – and check out snorkeling/whale watching. we saw whales and it was incredible!!!
