Upon first just seeing the poll, my reaction was totally, old farm as it seems more rustic. However, if there is no barn it somehow seems less romatic and barnish (these go together in my mind weirdly enough). A private club at first seems to say pretentious, but when you describe it as a cabin on a lake, no questions asked...that sounds beautiful!
Love the idea of the 'private club', which when you describe doesn't at all sound uppity like a club would, having that more intimate atmosphere on the water sounds great! And since you don't need a liquor license it will be much cheaper for you to just serve the alchohl... that's what we are doing. We are having our reception in a park so we can't sell the booze unless we have a license but we are just buying it ourselves and having the FI friend bartend... way cheaper and you don't have the worries of a cash bar! And there are good deals on liquor around the holidays... stock up now!

Hypothetically speaking, preferences and themes aside.. if it came down to two venues (for arguments sake lets say they are similar in price) for a mostly outdoor shindig, which would you choose?
Option one:(larger venue)
An old farm, with the possibilities of on site catering (optional for more $$$), a full bar with liquor license, large open fields, on site bathrooms with running water. HOWEVER, unlike many "farm" venues, this one does not offer a barn (as most do) but rather a building with a cement slab & 60+ picnic tables as the "inside" space for eating and dancing. The venue is 20-30minutes outside of Town A.
Option 2: (smaller venue)
An older, somewhat smaller cabin-style venue (a private club), on the water. No liquor license, large open lawn space with a great view of the river. On site indoor space with a small "kitchen" and bathrooms with running water. Some tables & chairs would come with the venue, as well as some flatware. Very private setting, despite being only 10 minutes from the downtown core of Town B.
