What's happenning is that Congress can't decide on a budget, which will effectively shut down government as of Friday if a budget cannot be passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the President. If this happens, the people who work at the passport agency will be furloughed until a budget can be reinstated. Even IF the government shuts down, there's no way that they'll shut down until July....that's essentially political suicide.
But, regardless, passports can take a while. If you're really nervous, I would send it in to be expedited, which will cost more, but will be processed faster.
Ditto what @NauticalBride2011: said. If there is a government shutdown, it will delay things. I can't see the shutdown going on for long, though. I wouldn't worry about it unless you are really, really in a bind. You still have a lot of time, and they do have a rush option available (costs more, but at least it is there). I got a new passport in January and it got to me in about 3 weeks. You have almost 3 months till July. You should be fine.
I just overnighted my passport renewal form this afternoon...I went ahead and paid the extra fees to expedite the process, and I'm just hoping that my application will get in the queue before the shutdown. Hopefully they won't be closed long and my application will be back before our honeymoon in Italy in July!! Eeek! That's what I get for dragging my feet about it!
I recently heard about some sort of passport card you could get, that is good for cruises...doesn't work for flights tho. I'm not sure of the details but a co-worker had told me about it.
Yikes! Of course I sent my passport in to be renewed last week and opted not to expedite it because the website said they were running approximately 4 weeks. I'm going to Italy in early June! Ahh! Something additional to stress about...

My fiance was telling me that obama was going to put a delay or hold on passports if there was not some sort of agreement made by friday? do any of you know what this is about or what it means?
Go figure i was going friday to apply for mine for a cruise i am going on in july. I am freaking out now. Will i still gt my passport in time?
If any of you kno anything please let me kno.
