I’m trying to decide how to do my name change, and it’s mostly for financial/legal hassle reasons.
We’re getting married June 26, then we’re moving to Florida from Oklahoma around August 1. So when we get back from the honeymoon, I would ideally go get my name changed and get a new driver’s license (which would be about the 2nd week of July). Then 2 weeks later, I’d turn around and get another new driver’s license when we move to Florida.
It’s going to cost me for a new OK license, then double that for a new FL license. Plus the cost for his new license and a big sum in new car tags for us. On top of being financially strapped recent college grads (this Saturday yay!) and moving to Miami for grad school.
Is it worth it to file all the paperwork, spend time in line at the tag agency, and pay an extra fee to change my name 2 weeks earlier? Is there really anything I need to change my name for in July? Maybe I’m just to eager to be “official” and kinda sentimental about it all, wanting to change my name the second we get back.

Wait! Why deal with the DMV twice? I get the eager, sentimental side, but it just seems like a lot of extra work and expense to me…especially since it’s only two weeks.

nah – i’d wait to change it.
heck, i waited 10 months to change mine! course no one knows we’re married…and no one knows i’ve changed my name yet either… :p
and i also don’t know about oklahoma or florida – but here in indiana i had to wait a few weeks for the gvt to send my new license as they all go through homeland security now and the MAIL you the new DL.

I had the same problem. What I did was get my name changed with the SSA and then waited on my license until we moved. After I got my license, I was able to change all our financial accounts (except the stupid mortgage! oh well!).

You can still use your new last name on unofficial stuff for the fun and do the legal business later.

@JuneBride – They MAIL your new id now?! That’s ridiculous! In that case there’s no reason to get a new OK license, just to have it mailed to me right before I move, if they get it there before that.
@MissAsB – Someone told me I had to change my license within a week of my name change, but I can actually wait? That sounds like a perfect option.

go ahead and change it through the social security office before hand. Do you have an address in Florida already that the new card can be sent to? Then change it on your license and such when you get to Florida.

at least they do in indiana!
i haven’t changed it on credit cards or my mortgage yet – waiting to do that while i’m at work and again no one at work knows i’m even married yet! :p

@soonerpsych: I was not told that at all. Most places it doesn’t matter if the license is changed a bit later than the social security office. I just went to the new DMV with my new SS card and marriage license and old license and told them I changed my name and they were completely fine with it! I would contact the state where you are moving to make sure that this would be okay.

I’d wait. It’s what I’ve done, which is why I’m here 5 months after my wedding and only *just* starting to change my name on official documents. Similar reasons as you, to do with drivers licenses (long story). I changed it at work pretty quickly and have started to get used to it, but I think it will help when all my cards and mail etc are in the new name and I’m using my new signature (is it sad that’s the bit I’m looking forward to most?).
