I have a dentist appointment tomorrow, and I’m wondering what you guys know about how safe it is to have dental work done at this time during pregnancy. Lidocaine and Mepivocaine are the 2 options for freezing. Any idea which one is safer? My dentist said something about the Lidocaine (which only comes with adrenaline) being the one recommended for pregnant women, I think because it works for longer. Which also means you have to use less. But I’m confused becasue I thought adrenaline was the one thing we were not supposed to have at the dentist? What are the actual risks of going to the dentist while pregnant?
My dentist seemed very anxious about working on me while pregnant, but agreed to let me keep the appointment after much convincing – I told him my pregnancy has been totally normal, I have felt fine the whole time, I’m not anxious about dental work, and I am considered very low risk. He is a very fatherly character and I did have EXTREME dental-related phobia / anxiety when I started coming to him (which has been all but eliminated by how awesome of a dentist he is).
I’ve been playing catch-up on dental work for a few years now and these cavities have long since needed taking care of! I’m not in any pain, but with 6 months left to go in my pregnancy, I’d much rather get them taken care of now rather than risk them getting much worse (as I hear can happen with pregnancy), and having to lie flat on my back for an hour, getting them fixed while hugely pregnant!
