My FI mixed an entire track of lounge music that we are giving to the DJ to play. Think Hotel Costes lounge music. We also made CD's of our wedding cocktail hour lounge mix to give to our guests as an additional favor. Pretty proud of FI for this... it was all his idea.
@Ms. Caniche: Impressive! My FI would never do that! He only likes early 90s rap...
I couldn't believe he came up with this on his own. It has been his pet project. He even designed the CD's that are being professionally printed with "Ms. Caniche & Mr. Caniche September 18, 2010"
I do enjoy 90's rap :) Maybe you can make him a special mix CD of all your fav 90's rap songs and put it in his car.
We've hired an acoustic guitar/vocalist for our ceremony - and because our reception is at the same site - we're hired him to stay long enough to contnue playing after until dinner starts. Hopefully it'll be appreciated. We don't have anyone "hired" for the reception, we're going to ipod route.
We had a Klezmer band (my husband's Israeli) for the ceremony and the cocktail hour. We loved it!! (And by we, i mean everyone else, because I have no memory of them whatsoever.)
We had our ceremony violinist play at the cocktail hour and everyone raved about him!
@daniellemybelle: You just had a solo violinist for the ceremony and cocktail hour? I was considering this, but didn't know how effective the music is with just a solo. You think the music came through loud enough?
We got a harp player, she came solo, so just a little bit of romantic background music.
We are using a dj, but have specified that we want laid-back, almost beachy vibe music...think Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz, etc. Songs that would almost be too slow-ish to dance to during our reception, but that we want to include to get the vibe going for the night.
We were going to have a jazz band, but they were super flakey so we're just having our DJ play jazz standards. Lots of Sinatra, lots of Miles Davis, etc.
Our string quartet played for the ceremony and cocktail hour, then DJ took over for the reception. I missed the cocktail to do photos but I believe they played upbeat classics and pieces from movies, musicals etc.
@Ngolden1: Our violinist brought backing tracks to make the sound a little fuller, but he is brilliant so he didn't need much! We also had a good sound system. I had my doubts about going with a solo violinist but in the end I was so pleased!
We sprang for a three-piece mariachi band! Otherwise it would have been the same DJs that are providing the entertainment for the rest of the night.
my vote would be Opt. 4: playlist off the MP3 player! We were married at the Aquarium and the cocktail hour was throughout the exhibits so we just piped music thru the sound system, my hubby made the playlist a few days beforehand. We had live acoustic guitar music and singing for our ceremony and a live band for the reception.

What type of music is it? Band, musicians or DJ? Are you selecting the play-list? What vibe are you going for? I have contracted with a DJ but am starting to envision other things...so I'm wondering what you guys are doing!
