Our photographer cancelled on us this evening. I’m furious as I had a bad feeling 3 months ago and wanted to cancel then and find someone else. We have 4.5 months until our wedding, and desperately need to find another photographer. Our budget is £3k/$4800. For that we would like full-day coverage (9am-10pm) and all the images on a disc, as well as a pre-wedding shoot. We would ideally like 2 photographers, but as it’s a small wedding could go with one. Don’t need albums, we can buy those later, but we want copyright to all the images and ideally 500+ images on disc. We want a modern, sharp style; I hate wishy-washy rustic styles and soft-focus images. Our venue is a very chic boutique hotel with lots of rich colours and we want the photos to really reflect that. Please please please help us out. I’ve trawled the internet and written down about 20 numbers, but we are getting married on a Saturday, in August, and probably 99% will be booked. Gutted is an understatement; photography is THE most important thing to us, and I feel sick to my stomach being ion this position 4 months out.

We used Neil Thomas Douglas. He’s based out of Glasgow but is willing to travel just about anywhere. He’s amazing!! And should be well within your budget.

Thank you! He’s been added to the list!
Urgh, I’m so upset by this whole situation 🙁

barbie86: Jeff Ascough is undoubtedly the best wedding photographer in the UK, to my mind:
I wouldn’t call his style modern, but it is timeless and he captures some utterly amazing moments. I think his base package is about your budget, too.
Edit: I don’t think you will get any professional wedding photographer who is any good to give you image copyright, although you will get a license to use the pictures.

Penang1885: oh wow! No way will he be available, but I’ll give him a call.

Jeff Ascough is truly superb. If you can get him your wedding pictures will be just amazing.
Would also add that you really won’t get copyright assigned to you by any professional worthy of the name. Not even if you pay thousands of pounds over the asking price. But you can ask for a picture licence that allows you the freedom to make your own prints or other personal use of the images.

I can recommend Daniel Ackerley. Based in Cambridgeshire, but travels and can bring another person on board if needed. He is a nice guy too, which helps: http://www.danielackerleyphotography.co.uk/
He gives you copyright too!

Daniel Acklerley doesn’t actually assign the copyright of his images to his clients. Instead, he offers them the pictures “copyright free” which isn’t the same thing as giving his copyright away.
His price for whole day wedding coverage is only £895. I would respectfully suggest that a close look at his portfolio tells you why.

Just trying to help. He is the only photographer I know personally to be nice that might be free and under budget.
You were suggesting someone who is probably the best in the country who is never going to be free in August and whose prices probably starts around the 5K mark. No doubting your recommendation is the best photographer and you clearly know way more than I do on the subject, but that doesn’t mean that a photographer is bad just because they are cheap (or that people who can only afford that sort of price range have bad photos although not trying to put words into your mouth).
I think Jeff Ascough’s work looks amazing though.

barbie86: I would totally fly over there and photograph your wedding in a heartbeat! Other than that I am not much help. I just wanted to say that was horrid of your original photographer and I hope you find someone fantastic.

Thanks all for the help; this is truly my worst nightmare as far as the wedding goes; the photography is SO important to us, and we are gutted. This week has been incredibly stressful, I’ve been in contact with about 50 photographers and most of our first choices are (unsurprisingly) booked. I’ve also come to the realisation that we won’t get the style we want; and that’s a bitter pill to swallow. We’re having to look for a slightly different style, and place consistency over style (whereas before we had both :-s)
Glasgowbound: Thank you 🙂 His work is awesome, I agree! I did call and unfortunately he’s booked 🙁
Steampunkbride: He’s available! But, nudging outside of our budget at £3.5k, without the 12 hour coverage we ideally want, and without a pre-wedding shoot. He’s still a front-runner, we just need to number crunch and see if we can afford him.
inamorata: Thank you very much! 🙂 I did take a look but he isn’t quite the style we’re after. Man, this is so tough 🙁
atomic: That is so sweet of you, thank you 🙂 And yes, it was indeed horrid of him, I’m so upset and angry >-(

Our photographer , Matt Ethan, is lovely, and I find his style quite crisp and modern. We’re not having a pre-shoot so I haven’t seen his work yet from a personal point of view but we’re really excited based on his portfolio. He would be within your budget I think.

- Wedding: October 2013 - Dalhousie Castle
barbie86: I’m not sure where you’re located by we used Emma Gray. She gave us all rights to the photos and about 600 pics from the day. She was a bargin at 800 pounds. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Emma-Gray-Photography/162964053727234
With your budget you could look into this guy. He has a very artistic and modern style but is a lot more expensive. Some friends of mine hired him and were happy. https://www.facebook.com/vanishingmomentsphotography
Best of luck.

barbie86: Oooh, that is great – I hope you can get him! We were hoping to fly him out to Malaysia for ours, but it turns out he only works within Europe due to visas and such. 🙁
