So I need some advice, I am hosting my own engagement party and we are having a dessert buffet and a coffee bar. It is for around 35-40 people. Can someone tell me how much dessert I need for that many people and should they all be the same color and flavor? If we are doing mainly chocolate then should we only do chocolate and no fruit? Or should we have a mixture? Any help would be appreciated! I wish there was more information on dessert buffets!!! Frown

I think with a dessert buffet, the portions should be smaller because people will want to try more than one. Are you serving cakes and pies that can be cut into smaller portions or something esle?

I used to work at a restaurant that did a lot of catering, and what they used to recommend was 1.5-2 pieces per person.

So if there are going to be 40 people you will need 60-80 pieces of dessert total. If you want to be safe you could do a little more than that. This takes into consideration that some people wont eat dessert and some people will eat a little bit more.

As far as the question on variety, I say go for it! The more options, the better.

I also think that fruit would be appreciated for those who are watching their figure! (if they can stand to pass up scrumptious desserts)

    Good luck!!!!

I think you should definitely mix it up and have some fruit desserts. Are you making anything? I saw these cute lemon cakes that Paula Deen made on tv the other day. I'll find the recipe for you if you're interested.

If they are regular big pieces of cake, I'd say 1.5 per person is enough, but if you're doing small things that are like 2 bites each, I'd probably eat 6 (eek!). So I don't know what average is, but I'd say 6 per person :)

I think having different options would be nice like cream puffs, cookies, maybe do a mousse or parfait type thing in glasses, chocolates.

I found this advice for a dessert reception that might be applied to your party:

I'd definitely mix it up. Some people are allergic to chocolate, while for others chocolate is the only kind of dessert worth having.

If you're having only a dessert bar, have more like 3-4 per person! And I agree with others... do some fruit type stuff. When's the party? Would things like Bakerella's pie pops or mini pumpkin pies work? (I consider it pie season, lol)

I would say minimally 6 pieces per person.  The experience, I have with dessert buffets that people usually take one of everything!  Regarding chocolate you could have cubes of white cake that people dip in chocolate and have strawberries and other fresh fruits to dip.  I am not a fan of the choclate fountain, as it can get messy and costly, but a small fondue pot here and there with sterno to keep it liquid and warm would work.  But that can get messy too.  If you can have the fruit already covered w/chocolate that would be the best and if it's all laid out and prepared you won't have to rush the last minute or stop to refresh bowls in the middle of the party.  They have those little pre made chocolate cups, you can have tiny smores by filing it w/a dollap of fluff and crushed graham cracker crumbs on top; or they have those new sterno smore makers which can be fun, too.  Again, I prefer having it all set up, but I'm not you, so do what goes w/your personality.
