A friend just got engaged and is trying to decide on a location for her destination wedding. If you're having a destination wedding, where are you getting married? And what destination wedding planning sites have been the most helpful?
Thanks!
St. George Island, FL Check it out, it is fabulous, no commercialization, no crowds, just sand, water and relaxation. Prices are high in peak season so best to go mid to low times of the year.
Cancun, Mexico! We had it at Le Meridien Cancun.
This is the site I used a lot: http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/forum
I read the Knot Guide to Destination Weddings. It really helped me a lot.
I'm doing mini-destination in Lake Tahoe. There is a Lake Tahoe planning guide online that I went to first before booking anything... We had the advantage of knowing our destination quite well, since it also used to be home!
We had a destination wedding in Taipei...sadly, we couldn't find any helpful wedding planning sites for the area, at least not in English.
I'm getting Married in Maui. I scoured theknot.com and google for wedding planners there. I talked to prob about 7 or 8 of them and asked a million questions about Hawaii. I also found mywedding.com to be helpful, you can pick your own 'guide' for whichever area and they list a bunch of vendors in every catagory.
Mr. Staticboy and I are getting married in Asheville....far enough away that not everyone in the world will come, but close enough that our dear friends and family will. Then we are having a party, the day after we get back from our honeymoon, for all our hometown friends and family.
We are getting married in Yosemite, at the Ahwahnee hotel. It was really the FI's decsion- he talked me into it. I had not really even thought about having a destination wedding but I think the idea of getting married surrounded by so much beautiful nature and at a really nice hotel is just amazing! We do not want a large wedding, just something with our closest friends and family (about 80 people), so this will work well for us I think.
Orlando, Florida...we got engaged at Disney, and our families are from different states, so it was a great in between. Plus Disney can be super affordable because of all the deals you can find. And no passports are required!
We're hosting our wedding in Las Vegas. Not outside of the country but far away enough that it counts as a "destination wedding". We're sticking around for a couple of extra days after the wedding for a mini-moon since our actual honeymoon won't be until 2010.
Like Miss Burgundy, we are also getting married at Yosemite at the Ahwahnee :)
Hello,
We are getting married in Negril Jamaica at the Moon Dance Villas. I concur with those who mentioned bestdestinationwedding.com. Lots of invaluable information there.
I wonder if it is possible to start a Destination Wedding category here at Weddingbee? Anyone know?
@cdogsmom: Do you mean starting a DW local board, cuz I agree that would be pretty cool. In the meantime, the wiki is a good starting point:

I also relied on the bestdestinationweddings forum to plan my Cancun wedding. It was a true lifesaver and Tammy (Host) is a rockstar in my book.
I got married in Acapulco. NO destination sites were of ANY help to me. I guess that's because it's not a popular site for people from the U.S. to get married. But it was great!
We're getting married in Paris, France, at the American Church in Paris in November. Finding a wedding planner was impossible because of the small size of our party. (It will be the 2 of us + 10 guests.). I procured the help of a writer who has authored several travel books and has been sending me a monthly Paris newsletter for 5 years. It was my last hope. She helped me enormously even though it wasn't her area of experise. She's arranging a stylist and make-up artist for me...securing an after ceremony dinner location. Simply having someone in France who speaks the language helped enormously.

Wyoming! We worked there, so it is destination, but definitely feels like home. I haven't really used much outside website help, but know it will be gorgeous... I am just having issues with the slow pace of the small towns surrounding the ranch! C'mon people, tastings are not unheard of!
We're also having a destination wedding in Wyoming...Jackson Hole to be exact. There are a lot of great resources online for the JH area, specifically http://www.jacksonholewedding.com/
MoSnow - where in WY are you getting married?
Well, it's kind of a mini destination wedding. FI and I live in Atlanta, but his family is in Alabama and mine is in North Carolina. As of right now we have it narrowed down to 4 places - 2 in Asheville and 2 in Gatlinburg. We are visiting those places next weekend and hopefully we'll be able to make a decision

We are getting married in Huatulco, Mexico! www.bestdestinationwedding.com/forum is very helpful to all destination brides, its the best!!
Our first wedding was going to be a destination wedding - we were going to the Mexican Rivera - at the Barcelo Maya Colonial Resort.
Everything was booked, but then I bugged out! oops! :)
Not married YET, but we'll be heading to The Rockhouse Hotel in Negril, Jamaica. Have heard personally from people married there and from guests at other weddings there that it is divine. Can't wait!
Doing a cruise, now has moved to May 2011, will either be on Maui or Kauai (secretly hoping for Kauai!!).
Charleston, South Carolina! Complete with horse and carriage send-off! :)
Beaches Resort in Negril, Jamaica, can't wait to say my vows on the beach.
Well, a timely post.
Despite the signed contract I have for a resort in Negril, I was informed on Friday that "They'll not be able to accomodate our party of 60" Excuse me?
Yes, I'm dealing with it now, it seems some corporate giant may have shelled out big bucks to rent the place for the month for their "Presidents" club/sales retreat or whatever... and the resort has said, "we are sorry, do you want to change the day? We have availabiltiy the following month?"
"Ahhh no, we don't, the invitations are printed, the plane booked...and on and on, and oh yeah, I've been working with you for A YEAR and the contract's been in your hands since SEPTEMBER!!!"
Good news... I have a kick-ass travel agent with a BIG legal department that is working on this for us.
Bad news... all of the obvious... yes, truly invitations are printed, but neatly piled in my dining room, small blessings!
So, we are relocating to another property in Jamaica... TBD.
Time for a cocktail? Indded, another one.
Beachy Bride- what a nightmare! I hope everything works out- so sorry to hear you had so much done already:( I hope they at least reimburse you for the invitations etc!
Mrsbee- I am getting married at Point Grace hotel in Turks & Caicos- I actually found it by looking at a photographer's website whose featured wedding was shot there. It's a boutique hotel and can only accomodate 60-70 people for a sit-down dinner, so not sure if your wedding will be bigger. I read the knot guide to destination weddings but they listed a lot of properties that were way out of my price range. Otherwise, I just asked around, used tripadvisor, and spent a lot of time googling!
We are British and have set ourselves the huge challenge of moving to Canada while trying to plan a wedding in Alicante, Spain!
In the very early stages of planning but can't wait
We are getting married in my fiances' hometown of Marina di Massa, ITALY!
It is on the Tuscan coast about 30 minutes from Pisa. Really close to the Cinque Terre.....which would be a very fabulous destination location.....check out the church in Porto Venere! It looks like the church on the promontory in the film "Mamma Mia." Stunning!
We just decided on a destination! Pensacola/Santa Rosa Island, Florida!
We're just beginning but I am scouring the bridal mags for the Emerald Coast!
It's totally accessible (nice airport there), great activities, and we're going to nail down either the last weekend or the second to last weekend in July.
My FI has family down there and his parents spend a month each year there and we're going to marry in the church where he was christened as a baby! It's gorgeous! Small, stone and stained glass chapel, and perfect! We're going to do a reception on the water overlooking the Gulf of Mexico!
We are getting married in Italy about an hour north of Rome. It is the Umbrian region at Salviano Titignano (www.titignano.com/gb) It is absolutely gorgeous. As far as planning and websites I've kind of been all over the place and found helpful bits from sooo many different sites. Especially for getting all of our paperwork in order...which is quite the doozy! (I'm American, FI is Danish, we live in Sweden and getting married in the Catholic church in Italy...ha!)
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. I'm from Chicago, but always wanted beach wedding. If I do it in SC, people won't have to pay so much for airfare and some can still drive it.
Key West, FL!
My FI & I were down there for a friend's wedding in 09' and we fell in love with it! We're having our reception on a 65' Catamaran. Unfortunately, none of the bridal sites were useful. I just used google for everything!
Orlando, Florida at Disney World's Grand Floridian Resort!! SO excited :) And it has been so much easier to plan for only 20 guests...my DW has kept my insanity in check!
