My friend got married the day after Christmas. She was very worried about people knowing the date, so she sent out Save-the-Dates about 11 months in advance. She sent invitations at the 3-month mark. I don’t think it’s really too soon for you to send your Save-the-Dates.

I sent mine as soon as we had the venue booked and a definitive date – about 11 months before the wedding. You want to give people as much notice as possible to save money so they can come.

I did the same as @Glasgowbound, it gives people time to prepare. We had a bunch of people book right away, a few trickle in after, and are seeing a lot more bookings now that the invites went out. Good luck!

@Janineforever:

For us:

STDs: 10 months in advance

Invites: 7 months in advance

We also made sure to have everything on the website before we sent out STDs.

Hope that helps!

12 months is definitely not too soon for a DW.

I sent ours out 11 months early. And invitations will go out about 6 months out. If u just don’t want to send out a year early its fine. But I would send save the dates NO LESS than 9 months early.

We sent ours out a year in advance.  Send them out now if you want.  Its better to be early than late with these things

I’m having a destination wedding to Panama Feb 15-16, 2014 and I just emailed our save the date video to family! Some of my relatives plan trips way in advance so I think sending now was definitely the right thing to do! As soon as I hit sent it was like, wow – this is really happening! I spent quite a bit of time editing the video so was very excited to share it.

i may send the STD videos to friends at the end of this month – I want to get our website up first with some inital travel info and also the one I’m going to use is good for 1 yr so I want to get my year’s worth!

We’re a little less formal on the whole invite/STD process, as we just sent a bording pass/STD in one. We sent that out about 11 months ahead(July2012 for a June2013 wedding). Any of our guests wanting to book the group rate had to put a deposit down by Oct. 1st,2012 so we wanted them to have lot’s of notice. Any other guests are to let us know by April 1st if they are coming so we can finish organizing our numbers etc with the resort.

We have a wedding website that gets updated whenever something changes or whatnnot and we also have a secret Facebook page for the same updates(many of our guest prefer FB).
