I came home in the early hours of Thursday to find my cat struggling to stand. She saw me and started crying. I immediately ran her to a 24-hour clinic where I was told that she had had a stroke, that her prospects were not good, and that she would have to be put down immediately. The vet gave her a sedative as she was in pain, and I got to hold her for a while. She wasn’t herself at all. Apart from being elderly, she was in perfect health and had been bouncing around my room that morning.
We had developed a unique bond over 17 years. She slept on my pillow next to me every night. She’s moved with me. She was the only sense of stability that I’ve had. I’ve always been more fond of animals than people. Over the years, people in my life have come and gone, but my cat loved me unconditionally. I feel like I’m not going to experience that kind of love again.
I know I couldn’t have done anything to save her, but it kills me that I wasn’t home when this happened and that I was in a rush and didn’t stop to kiss her on the head before going out for dinner with SO. I’m so tired of being reminded that she had a good life and that I was lucky to have her for so long. I know these things. I know I couldn’t have her forever. But there was no way I could have mentally prepared myself. I’m not upset about what we shared, but hopeless thinking about trying to move forward. I keep thinking I see her in the corner of my eye. I go to bed alone and come home to an empty room.

Losing a pet, (or anyone, for that matter) is never easy, but when you lose them unexpectedly, it’s always that much worse. *hugs*

I am so very sorry for your loss. I had a cat who died of a stroke three years ago and my current cat had a stroke two months ago He thankfully survived and is on meds but will likely suffer another and die anytime as he had other clots and is in heart failure. I know how devastating it is and my heart breaks for you, the suddenness is particularly cruel. She was a beautiful cat.

I’m so sorry for your loss.
I had the same feeling when I lost my first pet (a dog), that I was seeing her everywhere even looking in the glass door at us.

I’m so sorry 🙁 losing a cat, especially one you’ve had for so long, is awful. They are such important parts of the family. I know what that feeling is like and I know it sucks, so you have all my sympathy.

I am so sorry! We have two kittens (6 mos and 4 mos old), and I am already ridiculously attached to them. I can’t imagine going through what you experienced. *hugs*

I’m so sorry for your loss 🙁 it is one of the most difficult things to go through. She was a beautiful girl and now she can be your guardian cat angel. 🙂 *hugs*

Such a pretty baby! Losing them is so so hard, they are never with us long enough. Hopefully, when you are ready, she’ll send you a new friend to watch over you and be your best friend!

Thank you. I don’t know why I felt compelled to post about this. I guess just to remind everyone to hug their pets today.

@endplusone: so sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose a beloved pet, I know it all too well. I would be devastated too if something happened to my cat.
