DS annual birthday poker party is tonight and he wants deviled eggs. I have never had a good recipe for deviled eggs, I love other peoples, but I don't know what their secret ingredient is. There are so many on the web but since they are untested, I am unsure what the "magic" ingredient I should be looking for.
What is your magic ingredient, or what should I look for in a good recipe for them?
I use mayo, sweet pickle relish and mustard topped with paprika. Everyone loves them!
Are you guys fans of the sweeter kind, or the tangy, sour kind? That might help narrow down your search. I don't make them myself, but I think my grandma's always had plenty of vinegar and mustard so they were really tangy and delicious.
To keep mine light and fluffy I do equal parts REAL!!!! mayo and sour cream. Add a little mustard, pinch of salt, pepper, and a few good dashes of paprika. If I'm feeling crazy I add some chipotle powder.
@tksjewelry: Mine is the same as Mrs Green, if it still taste a little bland add a little pickle juice. I make the best in the family and they are highly requested.
@NDBee: More the tangy I think.
@Caizn: I thought I was the only person in the midwest who prefers Mayo over Miracle Whip.
I use the same recipe as MissGreen except I use Miracle Whip instead of mayo.
I make real bacon bits (fry bacon untill crispy then crumble)
I use miracel whip, lots of mustard and blend in a food processer untill creamy.
Then I put mixture in a zip lock bag and cut a corner off the bag, then I fill the holes with the mixture and top with bacon bits.
Edit to fix : using iPhone. :-)
I should clarify too! I use Miracle Whip, I know it's not "real" mayo but in my world it's the only mayo! ;)
@tksjewelry: Apparently its just you and me! Its a family thing, we will ONLY use Hellman's mayo. It makes me shiver to think of Miracle Whip. (Whats the miracle!?!)
@MissGreen: DH might have a panick attack if I used mayo, I have to keep packets of mayo for myself (I rarely use it anyway) or he thinks I put it on his sandwich. We have the famous battle of Mayo vs. Miracle Whip.
So, no one uses onion or celery, maybe I was looking for something too complicated. I had always made them very much like my egg salad, which is awesome for sandwiches, but not good with deviled eggs.
@Caizn:Me, three. I always have real mayo. Mr.ND has to buy his own Miracle Whip if he wants that stuff :-P
@tksjewelry: colmans mustard is a dry mustard that has really good kick! Just don't use alot. You won't be able to eat them. ;)
@tksjewelry:Checked with my ma. Ours are runnier, not fluffy, and only need mustard, vinegar and/or pickle juice, and a tish of salt/pepper if you like. No measurements, just enough mustard and vinegar to mix the yolks up to a creamy/runny filler.
Paprika on top! YUM.
I like smartbalance mayo, little mustard, and paprika on top. LOVE.
I use Best Foods (Hellman's) mayo with grey poupon mustard, a splash of lemon juice (vinegar works), fresh cracked pepper and paprika.
My husband prefers it with relish (instead of lemon juice).
We use creamy Italian dressing and a little bit of mayo to fluff them up. Everyone raves. I've also used ranch before, I liked hem but I was only makingmyself for my self
I use mayo, horseradish, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and paprika to sprinkle on top.
I make shrimp deviled eggs... So good. Get half a pound of the cooked shrimp, chop up and mix with about half of the yolks, some mayo (or the dreaded MW), garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
You could also add a little mustard but be careful not to overpower the shrimp.
@Miss Longcoat: Now your talking my launguage, DH and I love seafood, and I may have try those for our New Years dinner.
A little bit of mayo, mustard, chopped dill pickles, splash or pickle juice, and chopped celery if I have it. I always top mine with fresh cracked pepper instead of paprika. So much better than paprika!
You won't be sorry! Half pound of shrimp is good for 6-8 eggs. Get extra if you want shrimp salad sandwiches afterward.
@tksjewelry: I'm telling you thanks, too, because this gal is making some deviled eggs today :-)
I wish FI liked deviled eggs. :( He refuses to eat them. Hah.
@NDBee: LOL, I know, I am making extra so there are some for me to eat. They just sound so freaking good!
I make mine with 1 tsp of the regular yellow curry powder, and hellman's mayo. When I make these for a potluck, I do half plain topped with chives, and half curry topped with paprika. The curry ones always disappear first.
I think it'd be fun to do 1/3 regular, 1/3 curry and 1/3 shrimp.
When you're looking for shrimp, I'd reccommend Canadian cold-water shrimp. They're a little less meaty than the shrimp from Asia, but they're eco-friendly and sustainable.
I just have to say that deviled eggs are my favorite (I used to inhale them as a little girl), and I want to try each of the recipes here! :)
My absolute FAVOURITE deviled eggs have ranch dressing and pickles in them. I use this recipe and substitute onion powder for the onions and evey time I make them for a party they disappear so quickly I don't get more than one for myself!
You are meking me hungry! My FI puts mayo, mustard and Frank's red hot in them... and it wasn't that bad... it was actually very good!
Mmm, I think I have some new things to try! I LOVE deviled eggs, and make them frequently, but I have never thought to add pickle juice! That sounds YUMM!
I make mine with a lot of mayo, a little (yellow) mustard, a dab of horseradish, and worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper. Top it off with a little paprika! Nom nom nom
@kimbee23: Glad to see I'm not the only one who uses horseradish. It's so good.
