Tell him: Dress like a second interview, and treat it like one. Alcohol is always tricky – don’t be the first to order alcohol, but don’t feel obligated to order it either. For food, choose something sensible and neat. And cut food in smaller pieces than normal – it sucks to take a big bite and have someone ask a question.

Good luck to him!

Remind him to be very careful of table manners/etiquette – napkin in lap, eating only when others are served, etc. This is a good chance for them to judge how he acts in public, whether he’s professional and polite and so forth, in addition to the typical interview things.

jpalm13:  If he would normally wear the suit for an in person interview with this company, then it’s fine. I’m guessing that since it’s a dinner interview, it’s not a t shirt and jeans kind of job. A new shirt and tie that makes him feel confident is definitely a good idea. Tell him to remember, they need him, not the other way around!

jpalm13:  That’s reasonable. And he can always take the jacket off if he feels overdressed. My husband goes with a solid color suit, so if he just has the dress shirt, pants and tie, it works without the jacket.
