I know my post is not about ring, but I think it is best to post in here because the Bees here are more experience with diamond purchasing. So, I am getting a pair of diamond earrings as my wedding jewelry. I am torn between the two option:
1) Costco cluster diamond earrings. You can see them by clicking this link http://www.costco.com/.product.11670146.html?cm_sp=RichRelevance-_-categorypageHorizontalTop-_-PopularProductsInCategory&cm_vc=categorypageHorizontalTop|PopularProductsInCategory
Pro: the earrings appear to be big because it is a cluster. The website says it is around 6.3mm in diameter per earring
Con: it is a cluster, which mean each center stone is about 0.35 carat, and the quality is not great. They are I color/ SI clarity/ not sure about the cut
2) Blue Nile diamond studs with similar price range
Pro: I get to customize the earrings by picking the quality of my stones. With $1k extra , I will be able to get each 0.6 carat G color/ VS2/ excellent cut, polish and symmetry and they are GIA certified
I can upgrade those pair later with Blue Nile
Con: 0.6 carat stud (without halo) appears to be small. It is around 5.2mm vs 6.3mm from Costco.
I wonder if there is a way I can purchase loose diamonds from Blue Nile and custom set them in halo at local jeweler. Then will the price sky rock? Are they too small to be set in halo earring setting? Has anyone experienced this?
Please advise since I only have a little more than 2 weeks before traveling for wedding 🙁
Thank you for your help.

I would buy the studs from Blue Nile and then look into purchasing jackets from another store. That way, you would have the option of wearing them in a halo so they have more bling when you want it, but you can also wear them for everyday wear without them. That way, you still have the larger, better quality diamonds with the possibility to upgrade later on, but then you have the choice of wearing them with more bling, too.
Something like these:

@echomomm: Thank you so much. That is a great idea. I didn’t know the halo is removable.
But when I purchase the jacket, how do I know it will fit the stud? Or they generally fit any stud size?

Jackets are a great idea! I would contact Brian Gavin or whiteflash for jackets.

@goldfish2308: Generally, the jackets are sold for certain sizes – you can buy them to fit .25 ct studs or 2.00 ct studs and anywhere larger, smaller or in between. So you would just have to check that the jacket is designed to fit the size studs you buy.

Go with the stud and the jacket idea. I think it will give you the look you are going for, but also allow you to have a simple stud when you want it.

I’m biased b/c I don’t like the look of most clusters. I’m tempted to say go for the jacket, but I don’t know how long it would take to come in and then be set. I voted for buying from Blue Nile b/c you’d know when the earrings would be in your hands
