There is no right or wrong on the size of your diamond. What's appropriate is YOUR lifestyle together and what you and your fiance can comfortably afford.
I have seen gorgeous diamonds much larger than 2 carats and gorgeous diamonds less than one. And my sis has one much larger than 2 carats and incredible quality. Just because a stone is larger doesn't mean that the quality is poor btw.
It isn't the size it's the feeling that goes with the ring giving!
My soon to be fiance and I are a bit older (I'm 39) and have saved up quite a bit. Thus, he's able to purchase a larger stone than say if we were 22 years old first starting out after college. That being said, I'd be happy with whatever he proposes with. And happily awaiting that day!
The ring should be what is good for the both of you, looks great on your hand and is given with all the love in his heart. One month, two months, two years, who cares what the so called "standards" are..YOU TWO set your own standards.
And my soon to be FI is very good friends with a well known local jeweler here and he's informed us that from most reputable jewelers, the diamonds sold these days ARE conflict free as it's a huge issue in their industry and nobody wants to propegate that kind of situation.
CUT is the most important thing in a diamond. A stone with an excellent cut will look bigger than a stone of better color and clarity with a poor cut.
Here's a great tutorial:
