I have a 1.51 round brilliant diamond solitaire , color F, excellent cut on a 5.25 finger. I absolutely love the way my ring sparkles and shines. I personally do not have much experience in anything else but diamonds but I am sure anything you choose will be beautiful. I suggest trying a bunch on before you make your choice. Best of luck!

My number one choice would be the H&A cut round brilliant Amora Gem, but it won’t be available to the US until August 2015.

I just ordered my 7 mm 1.25 ct equivalent moissanite today. I’ll upload pics when I get it, including pics comparing it to a loose 6.8 mm G, 1.1 ct, VS1 diamond. That should be a very fair comparison considering they are so similar in size.

I have seen warm moissanite and very white moissanite. I have personally never seen a green tinge. When looking through the top of the stones, moissy faces up white (at least the ones I’ve seen). Any color I’ve seen has been apparent when looking at the stone’s profile.

I would personally eliminate white sapphire. It just doesn’t have the fire I’d want.

As for diamonds, I just think they’re not worth the cost. Our diamond cost around $8,000 and we can’t even unload it for half that. We have an offer of $1,500. Whoopie.

I would go with moissanite. That’s what I’m doing, for now. Then I’m replacing it with a 7 mm Amora Gem when I can, unless I love the moissy so much I don’t want to part with it.

Well.. I’m partial to diamonds. It’s actually not difficult to find an ethically sourced one. Sapphires are mined too if all mining concerns you.

I don’t like the idea of having a stone that looks like a diamond but isn’t one, so I would never want something artifical for my engagement ring. Just my preference. In costume jewelry, fine.

If you don’t care much then I’d go with a simulant since you’ll save yourself thousands.

@KaylaFromAR:  You have to see things in person, don’t make a decision based on photos. Please!

After spending way too much time on this ring board, I had to see a moissy for myself, so I found a jewelry store that carries one. I found it to be cool and interesting. I love the way it throws rainbows. I really liked what some here call “moodiness” where it just sucks up a color nearby, it becomes that color! I like the changeability.

I’ve seen white sapphires in stores and they remind me of cool drops of mountain water. They don’t sparkle, they sort of hold light.

I’ve had a diamond engagement ring for 25 years and so I know the properties of diamonds. I love my diamond, but I’m also attracted to the other two.

I would suggest that if you plan to get an elaborate setting, or if setting is important to you, sure, go ahead and skip the diamond and attendant costs and go with one of the others.

For me personally, I don’t regret getting a diamond, but I wouldn’t get another one. I am thinking about an oval moissy or an emerald cut white sapphire.

I have a 1 carat moissy center stone in a 1 carat diamond set. I have never seen a green color. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my moissy! It’s a Fb OEC. 🙂

This is one of my ring sets — it’s a half-carat moissanite. love it! I’ve never owned a diamond anything close to this size (my original promise ring/e-ring is a very tiny cluster) so I can’t really compare…. but it is extremely sparkly and rainbow-y!)

PS. Size 4 finger

Sapphire’s refractive index is much lower than diamond’s, so it definitely sparkles less. It’s the outside reflections that sparkle, not the “inside” facets.

Moissanite is double refractive, so it sparkles more than diamond. That’s how some people are able to spot the difference with the naked eye.

The Kimberly Process is pretty darn strict, so I wouldn’t worry about the blood diamonds hoopla. I swear it’s just an anti-diamond marketing scheme.

I suggest you see them in person. I think you’d be happier with a moissanite than a sapphire.

@KaylaFromAR:  man made diamonds cost just as much as natural origin diamonds.. Unless you buy from those “lab diamond” companies that don’t really make something that’s chemical compound isnt truly diamond.

Do you have a Zales or other chain jeweler near you? Most maul jewelers carry white sapphire. Stop by to check out the difference of that and diamonds. It’s harder to find jewelers that carry Moissy, but I think if you see the sparkle difference between sapphire and diamond, you can picture/imagine the additional sparkle of moissy.

I’m pro-diamond but not anti-moissanite. I helped my BIL make his engagement ring and they bought a Moissy. I’m very pleasantly surprised.
