I got my original dress custom made by an awesome etsy seamstress (cicibridal).  Well she also has her own bridal shop in Indiana.  I ended up going with a different dress, but she did an amazing job.

I asked for a replica of this dress:

and got this, an exact replica and beautifully made:

The great thing about doing a custom dress is that it’s made to your measurements.

You know what, I can’t even find a Philly seamstress to alter my dress!  I was surprised by that.  I’m taking it to a bridal shop now but I was hoping for a freelance.  Yeah, Connie from cicbridal was really great.  It takes a bit to get your dress bc she’s so busy, but you would be fine with your date.  You can always get a quote from her before you decide too.  I definitely wouldn’t pay that bs fee on the bridesmaid dress you loved.

I custom made mine 🙂  but if I was going to commision a dress I would definitely want someone local.  I would want them to measure me themself and to call me to try it.  I know from making mine that I tried it on many times throughout the process and made adjustments.

Fellow Philly gals! I have found that its cheaper to go to South Jersey seamstresses. Philly is outrageous with their prices!

I bought my dress in Haddonfield, NJ at Jay West and they recomended a seamstress to me who is reasonable (I have to bustle and add straps to my dress). I also went to a place in Philadelphia and they wanted to charge $300 to put straps on and $300 for a regular bustle, $500 for a french bustle! I thought that was outrageous. I dont have any particular seamstresses to recomend. I actually have a prospectful seamstress that Im meeting on Monday so Ill let you if shes someone to go to. Otherwise, Im sure you can search around for south jersey seamstresses on yelp.com, theknot.com, or south jersey bride. Hope that helps a bit!

@starbright333: I’m glad to know you got a great dress. I wanted to go towards the custom made replica, which definitely saves money!! Did you have any problems with this seller or was everything great?

@Chipmunk Connie (from cicibridal) was so great.  If you have questions she gets back to you right away.  She sends samples of fabric before she starts, and sends pictures along the way to make sure it’s what you want.  If something is wrong she will change it.  I loved her!

I ordered a custom-made replica of a Martin McCrea dress and it came out horribly. I ended up getting married in another dress as the custom-made one was so ugly. Please chec k and make sure there are no consumer complaints against whoever you chose and if the vendor has a Better Business Bureau report/rating. If I had done this, I would have learned the the place that constructed my replica has a BBB rating of F! Some brides luck out and get a gorgeous replica but my experience was a nightmare and I have run into other brides that also had some major issues. Because the replica turned out so hideous, I ended up donating it to Salvation Army and instead of saving money, I threw hundreds of dollars away.

did anyone else have a pleasant or horrible experience with a custom made dress? I am also interested in having one made through etsy, but very uncertain about it.
