I'm interested in knowing this too. I'm leaning towards not having favors at all, because most weddings I have been to the guests don't seem to take them.
we wrapped up individual boxes of 5 butter cookies from a local bakery that we love (Carlo's - aka the 'Cake Boss' dude on TLC) - and they went like hotcakes! we had enough for one per person...and let's just say, I didn't get any!
We had little quart-size tins of caramel popcorn that were made by this family-run popcorn company that is famous in the location where we got married for their delicious stuff (on all the must-try tourist lists for our location). It's a personal favorite of mine, so I wanted all of our OOT guests to be able to try it. It went over well, I think-- none were left, so I can only assume people wanted them. I wish I had kept one for our mini-moon!
We did chocolated that were in the shapes of shells and they all either got taken home or eaten that night :)
We did non-traditional favors--- at each seat, in a pretty envelope that said "Lucky in Love" we put a scratch lottery ticket sealed with a brand new penny. I think people got a kick out of them and it was fun to go around and see if anybody won. :o)
All but two of ours got taken!!! We had heart shaped measuring spoon sets. They were super cute and I was afraid they'd be cheesy and people would leave them behind, but everyone loved them.
Our favor was also part of there name plate and the majority of them took theirs home :)

If you had "traditional" favors at your wedding (i.e. individual somethings to take home), as opposed to no favors or a donation or what have you, what was the favor, and did guests actually take them? Or did they end up unclaimed? How did guests like them? I'm curious to see whether favors (depending on the type) are worth the work!
And for those who skipped the traditional favor, what was your alternative, and was it receieved well or poorly?
