My fiance sat in front of me and didn't get down on one knee. Wondering what other men have done. Is this still a tradition?
My FI got down on one knee under the christmas tree in NYC.... completely unexpected and very unlike him to do something so public. It was perfect :)
NOPE! We were at the top of a Ferris Wheel in Ocean City, MD. He didn't even let go of the ring until we were back on the ground!
Now, we have been engaged a year and every night after I get done with the dishes and leave my ring on the kitchen table (I take it off while washing dishes) he will come into the living room and get down on one knee and ask me to marry him again. Yes, this is a nightly thing for us. I still giggle and laugh. He always comes up with something funny and meaningful to say when he asks me each and every night.
Mine did, under the Eiffel tower... althought I think I said "YES!" and pulled him up to kiss him after less than a second of him kneeling.
It was for my 20th birthday and I was bummed because I thought it was such an UNexciting birthday. I was surprised when his grandparents came almost 3 hours for my birthday dinner. All of my family was at the restaurant and he had given me three gifts to unwrap. The first was a framed collage of us, the second a beautiful wedding like photo album, and the third was a picture of my engagement ring in a frame. At this point my FI had got down on one knee in front of the ENTIRE restaurant and I was bawling cause that was def the sweetest thing ever.
Alot of my friends husbands didn't, it depended a lot on where they were. We wre in a wide open space with no one around so he got down on two knees but a lot of friends had romantic dinners and more of a grasping of the hand, or told I have something to show you.....so it seemed like there were lots of different ways
Yup, my FI did. (I think I might have told him in advance that I wanted him to!) But my best friend's husband basically dropped the ring box in her lap when they were snuggling on the couch one night! Down on one knee is definitely not the only way to propose!
Mine didn't. He was sitting accross from me in our hotel room in Vegas and my ring was inside a Mrs. Potato Head doll (it made sense - I promise!) I love my proposal story!!
not on the day he actually proposed (on a hammock, nearly flipped the thing haha), but he got on one knee when we got our diamond rings :)
Yes! I was so flustered that I got down on my knees with him.
Nope - - FH proposed in a gorgeous green meadow, it was freezing and wet LOL not to mention once I realized what was going on I screamed so loud and cried hysterically and just hugged him until he was literally holding me, haahaahaa My hands were shaking like crazy too - - once FH started to put the ring on my finger I had to finish HAHAHHAHA
He sure did! Only I wasn't expecting a proposal AT ALL and when he got down on one knee like that it shocked/scared/startled me so much (he got down on one knee behind me and then said my name so that I'd turn around) that I knocked the ring box clear out of his hands! Thank goodness it didn't go far, because it was dark and we were next to a lake! :)
My Fi proposed to me in front of the LOVE sign in Philadelphia. It was amazing because I really didn't expect it. We donated blood at Citizen's Bank Park that day and then wanted to go see the LOVE sign because neither of us had ever seen it before, so we parked somewhere and then started walking, and I'm just walking along taking pictures of the buildings and stuff and FI is walking ahead of me, and I'm not expecting anything, haha. Well we fianlly got there and we are looking for someone to take our picture and then a family comes up to us and askes if we can take one of them, and so we do and FI says why don't we ask them and I'm like no no no they have a family and little kids to watch lets ask someone else. Then this guy looks at me and see that I'm looking for someone to take our picture and he points to himself and is like I can take a picture of you want, so I'm like "Okay great!" and so I'm walking to the statue and FI is kinda lagging behind but I don't turn around or anything like that to see what is taking him so long, so then he finally shows up and we get our picture taken, and then when I go to get my camera from him he takes my hand and goes "Now hold on Miss, this is a very special moment right now." and I'm like "What? What are you talking about?" and he laughs and goes over to my Fi (Boyfriend then) and says "Sir you come over here." and then comes over to me and says "And you madame come over here." and I'm looking at Fi like What the heck is going on, and all of a sudden he drops to one knee and opens this box, and is like "Will you marry me?" and I'm like "WHAT!? OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! YES!" I thought FI hired that guy to pick us out of the crowd because he was in a hurry to get to this staute, and was getting kinda annoyed when I would stop to take pictures, haha, but he didn't hire him. When we went to get our picture taken, FI showed the guy the ring real quick, and the guy was like "Wow, go for it!" haha and thats why he was lagging behind, but I was so shocked, and had no idea. I should of known something was up because he told me he always wanted to propose to someone there, and well he got his wish, haha.
Here are some pictures the guy captured, haha. dont mind me looking like crap because I just got blood taken 35 mins prior to this, haha.
@Mermaid1082: I did the same thing, though I was planning on doing that for a while, since I fairly well knew he'd be going down on one knee. I wanted the moment of our official engagement to be made in symbolic mutual submission to each other. I think he was too nervous to even notice what I was doing other than saying YES, though. :)
Yep! I turned the cornor and there he was with the ring. He made a point to tell me later that he was wearing shorts and knelt on concrete, b/c he REALLY loves me.
FI and I were at a hotel. I was laying on my stomach and he was sitting on the edge of the bed next to me. When I turned my head to ask him what he wanted to watch, he had the ring box open on his lap with the ring facing me. When I saw it, I shot up and he said "So...I was wondering if you would spend the rest of your life with me." I attacked him with kisses and cried as he tried to put it on my finger (it didnt fit) and then he said "you didnt answer!"...it was so cute...and so him
Nope, my FI has pretty bad knees. He took me to a beach on Valentine's Day (no one else was there) in Key West during the morning sunrise (which was extra cool because a thick fog had taken over the city all day and night). His tricky way of getting me there was saying we needed to collect seashells for my nieces. As I am beach combing (first time to a beach) he tells me to grab the really cool shell that was behind me. I looked and saw the ring box. I said "Oh you didn't need to get me a gift!" when I opened it I saw the ring and my first thought was "Oh this is way too expensive." I must have had a weird look on my face because he laughed and then asked me. When it finally hit me what was happening I got SO excited!
So, he didn't get down on one knee, but I wouldn't change that for the world.
Mine proposed via World of Warcraft, and dressed his little guy up in a tux and kneeled... does that count? ;)
It all happened so quickly! When he came upstairs to present me with the real ring, I can't remember if he kneeled or just kind of squatted (I was still in my computer chair, so I don't think he just handed it to me LOL).
we were on a bridge, and it was shaky. that along with his nerves kept him standing up.
Yes, he did!! On the ice rink at Rockefeller center, it was the most romantic thing I've ever seen in my life :)
Nope - he leaned over my shoulder and hung the ring down in front of my face because he walked up behind me. :)
lol mine SORT OF did, he attempted to, but i was so shocked i grabbed him in a death grip with my mouth hanging open before he could get all the way down and he did his little "i love you because" speech from a half kneeling sort of crouching position LMAO
every time i think of it i crack up. oops :)
I think it's still traditional, but I certainly think every proposal is and should be different!
My husband got down on one knee--and I wouldn't have had it any other way!
LOL no...mine got too nervous and forgot!
We were sitting on our couch and had just gotten home from the shore. He told me he had something to ask me, but was afraid I'd be pretty angry at him. So I of course think he did something terrible, but he ended up asking me to marry him. But he just sat there with the ring looking at me while I freaked out :o)
I forgot to look at the ring, and he forgot to get down on one knee...oops! It doesn't matter now...we're happily married for almost 3 years!
Ha..well mine started sending me little hints throughout the day, after he bought the ring. Then when i got home from work he handed me the little gift bag, the jewelry store had wrapped it all up! He was so excited he couldn't stand it : ) I had figured it out from all the hints that he had given me and the fact that we had already set a date we just didn't have the ring yet. So, i told him he had to get down on his knee and ask me... So he did get down on his knee and ask"will you marry me". He's too funny!
@2PeasinaPod: hehe thanks! actually, my first reaction when i saw his character walk up to mine was to type "why the f*ck are you wearing a tux? and why aren't you upstairs playing in the same room as me? do i smell?" LOL
i also think every proposal is different and maybe just depends on the guy too.
My FI did and it was so cute.. i love it!!
i asked him while we were both sitting on bar stools at a sushi resturant. There were no knees involved at all!
@moderndaisy: My husband wanted to propose on the rink but I dont do well in low friction situations, so he took me to top of the rock at sunset!
He got down on one knee in front of all the people up there, after a romantic day with a carriage rides in central park, and a row boat ride!
Nope. I wouldn't have wanted him to, though. We were around a lot of people, and I don't like to be the center of attention so he just sat down next to me, and it was perfect!
Nope, I was actually seated on a stone wall in Florence, Italy in the Boboli Gardens and he was terrified that in my crazy emotional state that I would fall backwards over the wall down 25 feet! He was right, I got wobbly and he needed to steady me.
Mine did, but a man not getting down on one knee doesn't make a proposal any less exciting or special! For example, my fiance proposed to me while I was sitting on my couch, wearing jammies. While some people might think that doesn't sound "special," it was perfect for me, exactly how I would have wanted it. Don't listen if anyone's telling you it's weird to not get down on one knee -- any proposal is special!
My FI and i went on a picnic and we started to clean up when i turned around he was on one knee. Wish i can say it was a surprise, but it wasn't, i was expecting it. I was on vaca visiting him in FL (he went to school there) and i found the receipt underneath our to do list in his room while he was at class.
