Did he pay too much for the setting?

@cbj9:  Taking into consideration that the shank is 1/2 carat diamonds with platinum metal,  I don’t think it’s too much, what is the clarity of the diamonds on the shank? Are they VS? Flawless, D E F color grades? There are tons of factors that go into pricing. My shank is .43 carats of diamonds and they are G/VS quality for 1,550 (just the shank and setting). F quality would’ve put us at closer to $2000 for .43 carats 14k white gold. So I imagine clearer diamonds with a higher carat weight and better metals would be double that.

@cbj9:  A 1/2 ctw in platinum,  but u didn’t list the specs of the setting.  Don’t know if he got ripped, but when FI and I  began our ering search, I do know we saw some 14k gold settings that were larger total carat weight for a lot less.  Notwithstanding,  if you love it and you two can digest the cost that’s what  matters the most.

Blue Nile and other online retailers will always be cheaper than a brick and mortar store, but here are three from BN that range from 1.5-2k. The carat weight may not be the same.

4k still sounds like a lot to me unless it’s a brand name like Verragio or Tacori.

@cbj9:  So yea, VS1, colorless 1/2 carat on a platinum metal, that seems about right. How much was it appraised for? Platinum does increase the price, especially with flawless/colorless diamonds. I found my shank on Igorman.com and the orginal diamonds on it were VS1, F grade but only .16 carats/18k white gold for $3,000.

@cmbr:  Also true, wholesale jewelers and online retailers tend to be cheaper.

@cbj9:  it really depends on the diamonds and the metal.

how many diamonds are in the setting?  how big are they individually?  are they full cut or pave?

yes, the setting is .5cttw but remember that many small diamonds cost less than that of 1 single diamond of the same weight.

the other thing to consider is the metal.  some rings are made with very thick shanks and bands adding a lot of material weight.  that adds up too.

do you have a picture of your setting?  i’m sure i’m not the only one wanting to see it.

For platinum and that much diamonds of that grade, I’d say that’s not ridiculous.

@cbj9:  Those are some great specs. FI just paid for a custom wedding band for my ering that’s 1.08 ctw, H/I SI1 0.03 rounds and 0.04.5. baguettes for almost $2,100. Some might say that’s insane, but we can digest  the cost and I love knowing that I will have exactly what I want. That’s what really matters!  Can’t wait to see your ering!

Is your diamond a branded cut? Appraisals are always high, but that seems really high.

@cbj9:  Hmmm with the stone being M color I’d suggest you post a picture for other bee’s to see, my shank is set in diamonds but my center stone isn’t. Although I’ve seen settings with less carat weight, etc being close to the same price,  I think you may want more opinions on this.

If you want a really exact estimate, the best place to ask is probably the Pricescope forums. Those guys eat/sleep/breathe diamonds, so they would definitely know fair/equivalent pricing on stuff.
