I bought my dress a couple months ago, but I've been having doubts about it, mainly because people don't seem to have an enthuasiastic response when I show them pics.

My dream dress for a long time was a Melissa Sweet one.  I kept comparing every other dress to it, and I could definitely picture myself wearing it at my wedding.  But as much as loved it, there was something off.  I couldn't put my finger on it.  Also, at $4000+, the price was way over what I had initially thought I would spend.  But my bridesmaids all loved it (in pics), it was my favorite thus far, and I was set to order it.

But then when I went back to try it on, I saw this other dress (from the Priscilla of Boston Jewel line) that looked pretty on the rack and had to try it on.  And when I did, I immediately felt like the dress popped.  I don't know if it was the color (this one's a much lighter ivory) or the silver beading in the middle, but it just seemed to brighten me up more than the Melissa sweet did.  My mom and dad (I decided to bring my dad for this one!) both loved it, and while they also loved Melissa Sweet, they thought the Jewel one made me glow.  I agreed, and at half the price of Melissa Sweet, I excitedly put a deposit down.

Fast forward a couple months - I finally got around to showing people my Jewel pics, and they don't seem to have the same positive response as they did to the Melissa Sweet.  And now I'm starting to wonder if there's something strange about the dress that I'm not picking up.  Is it the silver beading?  Or is it too princessy?  I think the Jewel definitely needs to be tailored more, especially on top.  I attached some pics of both below.

Did I make the wrong decision?  What do you think?

I'd love to see a photo if you can get it uploaded. :)

You know I started to regret my dress choice after I ordered, mostly because it was so different than the original idea I had in my head.  Some of my friend/family members weren't exactly estatic when I showed them the photo of my actual dress--I think because they were expecting something else.  I worried a lot about it, but when my dress finally came in, I was so relieved, because I knew it was the right choice.  Once everyone saw me in it, they agreed too.  Maybe that's why everyone's reacting the way they are?  they just had a different idea in their head originally?  that doesn't mean your dress isn't fantastic.

ok got the pics uploaded :]  just a note - on the Jewel, there should be another strap on the other side (but straps are detachable).

yeah, I'm thinking it's because they didn't really picture me in that kind of dress too.. I hope I'm reassured when it comes in and I get to try it on again!

If you are showing people those pics, I am SURE it is because the top of the Jewel dress is not tailored at all. It just doesn't fit you yet, and has strange looking boobies.

I think the Jewel is is GORGEOUS, and different.  The Melissa Sweet is pretty too, but I think the Jewel is absolutely stunning. I really think that once the Jewel is tailored it will be a completely different story.

    Love it!

I personally LOVE the Jewel. It is really unique and it looks great on you! Once you have the correct size in it,I don't think you should have any doubts at all. So refreshing to see a different style! Great choice!!

I think both dresses are fab but I actually prefer the Jewel one more.  However, it really should just matter how YOU feel about the dress.  Don't worry about other people's reactions or opinions.  You are going to be the one wearing it and you should wear whatever makes you feel beautiful.  I agree that it probably doesn't help that the Jewel dress is so big on you, so it is probably difficult for people to understand how it will look when it's fitted to you properly.  I had to choose between two dresses I really liked too and I know it's not easy.  I still really like the other dress that I didn't end up choosing, but sometimes you just have to make a decision and realize that there are probably many dresses that would look great on you but you can only have one.  You didn't make the wrong decision as long as you love the dress you picked!

They both look great on you.  Maybe people are just a little less excited with the Jewel because it's not the first time they're seeing you in a dress?

I think the "off" reaction you got is purely because the dress hasn't been altered. As it is it looks boxy due to the poor fit and it's a big leap from what is there now to how it will really look on the wedding day. Once you get it altered it will be amazing! I think you made the right choice.

I like the Jewel better as well!  I know that I found it hard to imagine how my dress would look on me when I had those huge clips in the back pulling it in.  It really does change the way that the dress fits you completely.  It will be gorgeous once it is tailored to you!

The Jewel dress is beautiful! I think once it's tailored you'll feel a lot better about it! Of course the Melissa Sweet is beautiful too--really it comes down to whatever you like! I don't think you can go wrong with either dress! =)

I LOVE the Jewel, it is so sophisticated and elegant. The straps, the waistline beading, the neckline, and the fabric are amazing! It just needs to be tailored. I also think it is a much more unique dress than the Melissa Sweet, which looks to me more like the type of dress you could find similar in almost any dress line.

Go with what you want! You are the one who needs to be happy! Either way you are going to be BEAUTIFUL!

You made the right choice by ordering the Jewel dress. It is gorgeous! So unique

I prefer it over the Melissa Sweet dress.

Please do not stress over what others think. It is your day!

I stressed over my dress also bc all my friends spent thousands on their wedding gowns and mine was only $1200. But in the end, I loved it. It looked great & fit me perfectly.

    best of luck !

I love the jewel one.  I tried on that Melissa Sweet dress and ugh, I didn't like the way it hung at all.  IMO, the MS looks kind of cheap for what it is.

I really love the jewel dress. I think it looks really unique, so others may not really know how to respond to it. Having worked for a year planning my own wedding, I'm accustomed to seeing all kinds of different dress styles, but non-brides, aren't.

Do remember that half of loving the way you look in your dress is being confident! Be bold, girlfriend!

I much prefer the Jewel as well!  I think you should trust your gut on this!  People are only seeing a piece of the picture and they will see it differently once its properly tailored to you.  I think you made the right choice!

I think you look great in both; you really can't go wrong.  They are different in style, and maybe that's why people are reacting the way they did to the Jewel.  Maybe they didn't expect you to choose a style like the Jewel dress...the Melissa Sweet is definitely more "traditional".

I like the Jewel much better than the Melissa dress.  Jewel is more unique and I agree with pp that it might look "off" to you because of the top part, which isn't alters. Once it's altered to fit your body, it'll look even more gorgeous! I love the side view of Jewel.  Pesonally, I think the Melissa dress was a little too plain and expected, compared to the Jewel dress.  I'd have picked Jewel, too.  I think you made the right purchase!

The Jewel is very unique!  That's probably why you don't get the typical reaction.  I think it is very hip and classy and if it's you, then go for it!  I love it.  The Melissa is more traditional and probably what people "expect" you to wear.  Be different - the Jewel is awesome :)

you shouldn't worry about what other people think about your dress, it's your dress! everyone has different tastes, and that's a good thing, other wise we'd all have the same dress and that would just be sad and boring.

I like the Jewel a lot. It looks to me like a Renaissance princess could have worn it with that lovely waist detailing. I'm not really feeling the Melissa, either, so I think you made a great choice.

Aww thanks for all your comments!!!! You guys are awesome.  I seriously feel a huge sense of relief - I was starting to feel like a weirdo for liking this dress.  And I totally agree about the altering...I'll post pics of the final version next year :]

@carrotcake: HAHA the strange looking boobies!  There's boning on top, which they said I could remove.  Hopefully it'll look a lot more natural once I remove it and it actually is the right size.

@littlespitfire, KLP2010: Yeah, my sister said the same thing about the material - looks a little cheap, especially for $4K.  I couldn't justify shelling out that much money for something I didn't love 100%!

I think Melissa Sweet dresses are a little overpriced. While very beautiful and fun, you look at the dress then look at the price tag and it doesn't really make sense. They are also a lot less formal looking, I think they're better for beach weddings or a more free spirited bride.

Looking at you in these two dresses, I have to say they are both great options. Both of them do the right things for your figure and are beautiful gowns. But I do think the Melissa Sweet is a little young and beachy while the jewel is more formal and elegant.

    Hope that helps!

As others have mentioned, I think it's definitely that the dress is not tailored yet. That's the problem I have with photos of me in my dress - the bust needs some serious tailoring and it throws off the look of the dress, but if you can envision the tailoring, it's perfect. I think the Jewel is beautiful - much more original than the Melissa Sweet, although that is also a pretty dress. But I think your guests will be seriously wowed by your Jewel dress!

I like the Jewel one more... I totally understand what you are going through.  It is very hard to not care what people think.  I am finding I never get the reaction I want when I show people anything.  Which is why you always have to do what you want to do.  Because pleasing anyone else won't make you happy.  Now.. if only I could listen to my own advice! Wink
