Hi all, long time bee creeper here. (Has “bee creeper” been used before to describe a non-member who reads the boards, or did I just coin a new term?)
Anyway, I bought my wedding dress back in September from a local bridal shop. The other day I got curious to see how other brides wear the same dress, so I looked to see who the designer is, and all I found was a “made in china” tag. I bought a sample dress, so it doesn’t have the original tags.
Today I called the dress shop to ask if they could tell me the designer. They said my dress is part of the “special collection” that they designed themselves, and I won’t be able to find it online. To me, this screams “we bought a bunch of super cheap dresses online and marked them up 1,000%”. Has anyone heard of shops designing their own dresses, or was I duped? I’m not too worried about it, because in any case I love the dress, and it wasn’t too far out of my budget. I’m just really curious if I had been had.

Sure sounds sketchy to me. I’d contact the Better Business Bureau or similar organization to ask/alert them to this practice.
EDIT: It isn’t so much that the dress was Made in China, it is a question of misrepresentation and whether or not the shop is being upfront with you on them making it themselves or, as you suggest, just buying a bunch of dresses elsewhere and marking up the price.

A lot of dresses from well known designers are made in China. Heck my Calvin Klein coat I’m wearing right now (which cost a fortune) was made in China.
That being said I think it would be best to post a photo of your dress as bees are quick at identifying the designer of any dress.

If you love the dress and think you paid a fair price, then I wouldn’t worry about it. I would tell people that you bought a custom made one of a kind gown and got a great deal.

Wow, that does have the potential to be sketchy….but like @Treejewel19: said, a lot of things are made in China. Do you have a pic on hand?

I douuuuubt they designed it themselves… but… it may not be “super cheap” – a lot of well known designers have their dresses made in China, it could just be a perfectly good but no-name brand and they’d rather have you think its “special” 🙂 As long as you love it, thats what counts!

Alot of designer dresses are made in china and alot of their dresses are not online. I have a tea length designer dress that was never even photographed for a catalog. I even called the company to make sure, and yup, it was theirs just one they only do special order on.
Maybe you can post a picture of it and another Bee will know it or be able to track it down, some of these ladies are google geniuses.

Thanks guys! Like I said, I’m not too worried even if it is a cheapo dress. There’s not much I can do at this point, and I still love the dress. I’m more curious about it. I have a picture. If I upload, will I be able to remove it from weddingbee servers after a period of time?

I’d be PISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSED

@johanna42: I’m very curious to see the dress. You can remove the photo on your photo upload page I’m pretty sure.

Most designer dresses are in fact made in China. The big problem people have with ordering dresses from China online is that without a designer to monitor the quality of the dresses (in order to protect its own trademark), there can be no guarantees about the quality. However, if you saw and tried on the dress before buying it, that’s not an issue.

@johanna42:sure you have an hour do delete it off of your post and here is a link to the other way to delete it
