I just wouldn’t say anything.  That’s what I did at least when we had our housewarming party 🙂 some people brought gifts.. some didn’t

@Meant2Bee:  dont say anything. I doubt anyone is going to go overnoard wih a huge gift becuase you bought a house. Like you said they may bring a bottle of wine or something, but stating you dont want gifts makes it sound like you expected them.

@Zhabeego:  btw, if you’re talking about the engagement party, they didn’t beg anyone for anything. they collected voluntary donations to prevent child abuse.

I would just say “no gifts” explicitly.  People might still bring something, but most won’t.  We had this same situation and asked people to bring a side dish or booze.  That way they feel like they’re contributing something, but they don’t feel obligated to buy you a gift.

@Zhabeego:  Jeez louise, put the claws away lady.

@Meant2Bee:  ih I know, if I saw something that said no gifts my first thiught would be that they already expected people to get things ya know? Congrats on the house! That’s excitig. I echo a potluck type deal. People like to contribute. I personally was taught to never show up anywhere empty handed
