I budget very little for working out. A pair of running shoes, hat, some sweatpants and gloves are good enough.
If you don't want to go outside in winter get yourself a pair of free weights and look up some exercizes on the internet. Google or youtube some kickboxing routines or aerobic routines. Or go to the library and rent a workout video. Working out doesn't have to cost much at all.
I didnt budget for workout expenses because we workout on a pretty regular basis anyway..
I didn't budget for it but I did go to a trainer for a few months before my wedding. Just came out of my regular salary though.
@troubled: Thanks for the response! I totally know that it doesn't have to be expensive. I am just worried about bordem.Hve you done any videos/workouts that you really enjoyed?
I tend to have a hard time motivating myself... I do bikram yoga and take spinning classes when I have the money!
My husband loves to do kickboxing with me in the evenings, so that's fun to do with him. If you have a bike we have a 'trainer' that you can hook your bike up to and spin inside. I think you can get one for like $150. http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3764375&CAWELAID=437744259 . I don't have this one so can't vouch for it and there might be cheaper ones out there, not sure, it was something my husband got. I just watch hulu while I'm working out then. For ab workouts I really like miniskirt makeover on youtube.
I didn't/won't budget, because the only things I do that cost money (yoga and riding my horse) are already in my budget.
I dont work out besides my physical therapy which is just a series of short excercises and stretches I do in front of the tv.
I'm not even going to get into how much I've spent this year on exercise-related stuff. (ok, it's not that bad, but probably like $1000 or maybe $1500 between gym membership, gear, trainer, and sports league membership fees) But to me none of that is a wedding related expense - it's stuff I'd be spending even if I wasn't getting married.
ETA - foam roller by the way was the best $20 I've spent! I just need to plug those things because I am sitting in my uncomfortable work chair and really wish I could use it right now.
@Entangled: I totally appreciate your comment! I also love the ETA! I wish I could pretend like I would have started working out again if I wasn't getted married. When me and Mr. met I was working out six days week... I was a fit little hottie. Unfortnuately I literally haven't worked out in 2 years!! Not a single second, poor Mr. I feel like this is really my gift to him (and myself)
I agree about the foam rollers. I have a big foam roller about 9 inches diameter that I just lay across and stretch out my back. I dont work out but I do eat very healthy. I eat quality of quantity. I think that was the most important aspect to MY weight loss.
Luckily for me my Fi is a fitness freak so as soon as I moved in with him a year ago, he signed me up to his gym--no expense for me there =)
@Miss_JD: Thanks.
Hopefully you can use this as a springboard back into working out. I really try to do it more for how it makes me feel (and because if I don't keep up the gym workouts, I will be even more lousy at ultimate than I already am!) which makes it easier, I think, to stick with it through different circumstances.
It's DEFINITELY harder when you're not single, though. Since I get a big mental drop if I don't get my workouts in, I make it happen but my fiance would MUCH prefer if I skip a day or two. I can hear him whining already that I'm going to go to the gym on my way home.
Also, if you're looking for low cost indoor options, I know a lot of people on here are really big into 30 Day Shred. Maybe you could try something like that until the weather starts to warm up again.
@Miss_JD: Totally know what you mean about being fit and hot...haha!!! Four years later and 30 lbs heavier.
As for your question, no I didn't add fitness cost to our wedding budget. I was already a gym member before the engagement. It is just a matter of using the membership.
I wish I had tried to budget, or could rearrange my regular/nonwedding budget for a gym membership. I've been trying to make do with an array of workout DVDs on the Netfllix instant queue. It's... better than nothing, I guess.
@bride2bejc: so jealous!
My FI loves to work out but he's also been slacking! We are both in grad school.
When we got engaged, I got HIM a gym membership!! We recently made a couple goal: he'll try to beef up and gain 8 lbs and I'll try to lose 8. I weigh 125 so I don't really have that much weight to lose, but we are hoping this will keep us both motivated :D
@Entangled: I should look into the 30 day shred! My sister just had a baby and is doing it! She loves it and has alredy lost 15lbs.
I don't even know what it is but it sounds terrifying
@IlsaLund: What kind of workout videos?
I can't decide if I like those hip hop/dance/strip videos or if I think they are just super cheesy!
@Miss_JD: If you start a thread asking about it, you'll probably get tons of advice. It's actually weird that I haven't seen people talking about it lately, since a few weeks ago it seemed like every day someone would have some question or comment about it. I guess these things go in waves.
Someone may even jump on here and give you some suggestions about where to get it cheap or how to get started - I've actually never done it myself (tiny little living room!). It sounds like it's less terrifying than P90X. That's the one that scares me!
@Entangled: hahaha I totally agree. P90X is not even on my radar! I find it so terrifying I can't even take it seriously.
I didn't budget for it, but that's because I don't consider this a wedding cost. Yes, the wedding is a motivator, but I hope to find other motivators after the wedding. I don't want to stop working out after the wedding, so I see this more as a long-term investment.
@Miss_JD: The 30 Day Shred isn't terrifying! It's tough at first but some girls swear by it. I have been doing it for a month or so now but I'm not consistent with it.
It is basically a 30 minute workout that goes through strength training, cardio, and ab work in 3 circuits. There are three levels, you progress when you are ready.
Here are some threads about it:

I just did workout videos at home. I really don't think anyone needs to spend hundreds of dollars on workout plans and if they do, they don't know what they are doing. If it is someone who has never worked out a day in their life and have no idea what to do, then a trainer would be a good idea. But if a bride just needs to get back in shape, workout DVDs can do the trick or running outside, etc.
Definitely not. I did the same workout that I always did, and that I do now that I am married. Working out was not a wedding-related expense, it is an everyday expense.
@Mrs. Louboutin: What workout DVDs have you been using? What would you recommend?
I am totally new to workout videos. I am such a gym rat!
@Miss_JD: I actually like the Crunch videos, I've yet to find one I didn't enjoy. (Except for the Candlelight Yoga- it's... quiet. Not really a workout/not my thing.) And the 30 Day Shred is good too, but I've never been able to go through it like you're supposed to. I like dancey-hip hop videos, probably because in my home, alone, is the only time I'd ever do anything like that. :)
I would love to join a gym and/or have a personal trainer closer to the big day...we'll see how much money I can wiggle out of our budget at that point (probably none). At the moment, I'm just running (shoes are expensive but I was budgeting for them anyway) and doing weights with Jillian, courtesy of No More Trouble Zones and the Shred :-)
Try free workouts. If you have certain Digital Cable channels, OnDemand has exercises from ExerciseTV. In fact, check out their website exercisetv.tv. Most of the videos are free, unless you're intent on downloading them. Also, YouTube is a great resource, too. There are tons of free videos. If you have a Netflix subscription, check that out too!
And the 30 Day Shred and other Jillian Michaels are under $10 a piece on Amazon. Cheap and a great work out!
Thanks for all the great input ladies! I will def look into 30 day Shred and keep an eye out for free gym passes.
We didn't budget for it since we already have gym memberships. I am considering doing a boot camp or some personal training which would be an extra charge, but I haven't included that in our budget
@Miss_JD: If you go to Walmart or Marshalls they have a BUNCH of workout DVDs that are under $10 a piece. At Walmart there's a huge variety (lots of Jillian Michaels and Biggest Loser stuff) while at Marshalls its usually hit or miss. I got a few pilates DVDs at Marshalls that came with "props" (a mini balance ball with one DVD and resistance bands with another) and they were only like $6 each. If you have a Five Below (its like a fun dollar store) near you, you can stock up on hand weights and yoga mats for pretty cheap. But in all honesty you can put together a great workout set for very little money. I actually found a barely used, really nice stationary bike on craigslist for $50. In the grand scheme of things $50 is SUPER cheap for something that I'll have (and hopefully use) for years to come. I've found the more options you have right at home the more likely you are to actually workout.
I didn't find the Jillian 30 Day Shred to be good at all - for me, I didn't feel like I was getting a good enough workout. I used the Beach Body Insanity workout series. Those were great. I felt those were the best workouts I had since running varsity track in college.
Oh I voted too early. I thought you meant in your general life budget - which yes I have allocated part of my budget for gym membership, healthy groceries, etc.
As for the wedding budget, no, I won't be adding any additional health/fitness expenditures, since I already make it a priority in my regular life.
@Mrs. Louboutin: I agree that you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars... I do spend a lot, but some of that is because I play a sport which requires league and tournament fees, plus cold weather gear for running around outside at night. I also like to do lifting with heavy weights so I try to work with a trainer every couple years to make sure I'm training right.
That said, gym membership can be pretty expense. When I lived in New York, I went to the cheaper chain in my neighborhood, and it was still $80/month for membership alone, but it was worth it to get out of running in the cold.
I already had a gym membership. I just ramped up my workouts. I mostly ran on the treadmill (varying between HIIT and steady state runs), did a variety of weights (but lifted a bit heavier) and ab work.
DVDs don't tend to work for me because if I'm home, the last thing I want to do is work out.
@Entangled: You are the perfect example of why it would be a good idea to spend $$. This makes total sense to me. I think that people who get gym memberships who have never been in shape or have a ton of weight to lose, but have no idea where to even begin are the ones wasting their money. I think the gym memberships/ league fees/ trainer fees are only worthwhile if the person uses them the way they are supposed to use them to achieve whatever weight loss or fitness goal there is.
@Mrs. Louboutin: I think my neighbors would disagree with you. ;)
I don't spend hundreds in a month, but I do in a year. Some people just aren't as motivated at home, and for others the workout that works for them is not at home. For instance, yoga at home is not nearly the same to me as yoga in a studio. And I obviously can't ride at my apartment!
But there are plenty of fun, low-cost things one can do outside of a gym. Our local park has low-cost or pay what you can yoga classes on Saturday mornings and little exercise stations along the running path.
I already work out and have an active gym membership. I don't have money to spend on a PT whether getting married or not, so I really have not had to spend more than I normally do on my membership. I have started taking more classes which focus on the things I won't work on if left to my own devices. Read: arms and abs.

Now that I am a little over six months out, I am starting to take my wedding workout more seriously, the problem is: I didn't budget any money for a wedding workout plan!
I was just wondering if other brides had the foresight to add their own health/fitness into their wedding budget. If so, what do you budget for? On the other hand, what are some creative low budget options for brides on a tight budget?
**Keeping in mind: Winter is just around the corner and it is unrealistic to say i'll do anything outdoors!
Thanks hive!
