I've heard so many people say that they found Weddingbee confusing the first time they visited!
Usually they mention that it took them a while to "get" that it's a group blog and not one person blogging 30x a day about their own wedding!
I wonder how many people find Weddingbee confusing at first blue. How about you: did you get how the site worked right away?
How long did it take for you to "get" it... and what triggered your "aha" moment: was it seeing the icons? Seeing pictures in the posts? Having someone explain it to you?
Well, I wasn't familiar with blogs at all. I'm really not internet saavy. So at first glance, I thought anyone could post a blog but never thought I'd participate. Then I realized the Boards had live threads and I could respond and I was so excited! But it did take me actually a few months of coming to the site every once in a while and poking around.
I was confused because the first post that I saw was an archived one from Mrs. Jasmine (I was googling mehndi parties)... and I happened to go to junior high, high school and college with her. ;) We grew up in a somewhat non-diverse area, and I remember a lot of people telling me that I "don't look like [Name]; I look like a Jasmine" (Disney's Aladdin came out around then--and of course I'm not Arabian or anything close ;). So I just assumed that this "Jasmine" person was an imposter pretending to be her, and using her Facebook profile photo to boot!
A few clicks and I figured out what was going on... but I can't imagine I would have been confused if I didn't recognize the first Bee I saw!!
It took me a while to get the hang of all the non-blog parts, like boards and classifieds. I also didn't realize for a while that non-bloggers could post in the gallery and bios. In fact, I'm still working on using the wiki, pro and folio!
But the single most confusing thing - abbreviations. I know there's a wiki post on it, but I really don't want to pull up another page everytime I don't know what someone is talking about. It's tough to learn them all!
Took me about 5 minutes....i LOVE weddingbee's forum layout. It's so much easier to navigate than regular boards. I found the blog a little confusing at first--it just took me a few minutes tho to get that there are X number of "bees" blogging.
I think an "about" or "for first timers" type section would be helpful. Then agin, that's what FAQ's are for, but sometimes you gotta put it out front and center, even tho there is an about section under "more"....it's not easy to find
I didn't get it right away, but I picked it up quickly!!! Like, 2 or 3 visits. lol.
It took me a few rounds to figure it out! I really only found it by the classifieds section at first, so that's where I'd hang out. I eventually went over to the blog and figured out what was going on there, then to the boards. There are sections I still haven't been to!
i have blogged before on sites but never on a site where i could comment like i can here. the sites i blogged before on were more of a this is my personal blog with pictures and if you like you can add comments and pictures (the old wedding channel blog).. it's sort of a combination of the bee's that blog with the boards... it was more of a every bride is a blogger versus here. i think that most of us blog on sites like blog spots etc but none of us on the board have a thread dedicated to our wedding and our blog which is how the wedding channel was. so that was my only learning curve. this layout seems to encourage more community and that's why i love love love it!!! the other sites didn't really have a community orientation. i voted the second one btw :D
It took me a while (as the other Bees have said) to realize that there were multiple bloggers, and each time a new little icon popped up I began to understand it more. It really isn't that confusing once you read the bios of the different Bees. That was the most helpful thing I found at first. :o)
I had come across this site a few times from clicking on the link from other sites and totally had no clue what weddingbee was all about. In my defense, I wasn't too active in the blogging world, so I just had no clue that it was a blog at first. I really don't remember when it clicked for me or when I got addicted, but somehow I figured it all out. :o) I think I was more active on the boards first, till I finally figured out all the blog stuff.
I've never been part of an Internet community before, so it took me a little while to figure out all the different parts of WB (boards/wiki etc). However, after a few days it was pretty simple.^^ I agree that something more prominant for first time users would be helpful.
i hope i don't seem like a dummy
, but i have to admit i totally didn't "get it" the first time i found the site by accident. I only found the classifieds through searching on google and then stumbled to the boards. I never even knew there was a blog ( and at that time, didn't even know what a blog was ) I didn't return to the site for awhile...
Then again i was searching on google and found a link to a topic on the boards... i gave it another look and after 4 or 5 visits of really clicking through the site, reading blog entries and the boards, i finally got it. It took me another few visits to figure out what a bee in the "hive" is & levels and what a "Bee" blogger was.
after all is said and done i love LOVE weddingbee and have never looked back!
The first time I landed on the site, I was totally unfamiliar with the blogging world outside of LiveJournal. I figured all the bloggers were friends who knew one another...but I thought the icons were cute so I visited another time and quickly figured it out!
I understood that the different posts were by different bloggers because of the icons. Also, just a little reading clued me in because of the different wedding plans and different writing styles/"voices". I found the boards a bit cumbersome but quickly just began reading through the pages without going to the separate boards at all, which I still continue to do. Some other features such as the gallery I use very infrequently, partly because I just prefer to read and write, but also because I never quite got the hang of navigating them.
Hope this helps!
What took me the longest was to figure out that not just anyone can blog here; I searched high and low for the blog sign up. I think I was a little bitter at first, and thus it took me longer to get 'into' the blogs, but I dove into the boards with a passion. :)
i think i figured it out right away just because my friend explained to me what wb was..
I actually didn't join WB for the blogs... I joined for the boards! I didn't really get into the blogs until recently because of the new batch of Bee's. I had joined right when a lot of Bee's were getting married & it was hard to catch up.
For the longest time I didn't even think of WB as a blog-- I just saw it as an online community of some of the nicest gals in the world! :)
I didn't have too much trouble navigating my way around. I did however have trouble understanding the language!! BM, STD, DOC, FSIL, etc had me stumped for awhile & kind of turned me off until I found a link to what all these crazy letters meant!
I have to say that the boards attracted me, too! I felt like I didn't really 'know' the bloggers, until I took the time to read their profiles, understand the cute names, and read about the process of picking people to blog for WB. Now I just love everything about it!
I found the sites blogs first, and it did take me a couple of visits to figure out the icons were different bloggers. Since I was accessing through google reader, it took me a while to find the boards and the rest of the stuff on the site.
It really took me a while before I really understood how to find my way through the site....I was a member for a few months before I posted anything simply because I really was confused at first...
While the main site is/was fairly different from what I am used to, the boards on the other hand I found to be incredibly user-friendly and simple to navigate right off the bat, compared to other wedding communities.
It took me a while at first, not because of the layout, so much (although this was way back in the xanga days, so I don't even remember the layout from then!!), but because I think it was while the great majority of the bloggers were Asian. So my first few visits, I clicked around for a few minutes looking at pictures, then went away because I thought it was intended to be just for Asian brides. Then I started reading Mrs. Ladybug's posts and I was hooked because she was so funny. :)
It took me reading a few blogs from the Bee's to figure out what happened - so about 15 minutes? The different images helped. And I saw some bloggers commenting on other blogs and that helped too.
The forum was easy - those I've done before! :)
The only thing I access are the boards and gallery here on wedding bee, so I got it pretty quickly. I don't bother to click on the other tabs yet because im having too much fun with these two, lol.
I got it but as for the classifieds I wish you guys would make it so that you can search for exactly what your looking for instead of having to wade thru all the posts.
I got the blog right away. The boards and other features took me a little time to figure out. But it was all user error, not design error! ;)
At first, but after I looked around a bit & got used to everything, then it was pretty easy.
I think I figured it out right away. I noticed the blogger icons and names and then looked back around a little bit.
I was confused at first. I didn't realize that the bloggers were different and had to apply, ect. That's why my name is just Bamboo...I was copying to Bee names instead of just making a regular username. But it didn't take long to put it all together after that.
I found this site at some point in my wedding planning but didn't quite get it. I don't remember what was confusing about it since that was like 3 years ago (geeezzz...soooo long!). I think it had something to do with the group blogging thing though.
It wasn't until after my wedding (hence my Mrs. screenname) that I came back and actually took the time to figure out how to navigate this site. Now I don't know why I was ever confused at all...but I was, I'll admit.
Maybe an intro to Weddingbee page or post is in order? Glad to see I'm not the only one who was a bit confused...I felt so lame! And I was super bummed I didn't "get it" at first because I missed out on using Weddingbee while planning my wedding!! I am still so upset about that!
I understood after looking a the first page for about 2 minutes, and I didn't actually start using the boards until a few weeks ago. But I think I go this under control. :)
I was confused exactly how you described. I found Weddingbee, looked around a little, and was confused so left. A couple months later, I stumbled across it again and did a little more reading. I read through a ton of blogs, and even some Wikis about how Weddingbee works and somehow I just finally got it.
The biggest thing I found confusing is what the acronyms stood for. Most I was able to figure out but I still don't know exactly what DH stands for. :)
DH stands for darling husband... which always makes me laugh, because sometimes I see women ranting about their husband (not here but elsewhere) and using DH. I'm like, "Do you really think he's darling right now?"
I've always wondered how that term came into usage on the internet, because it's not something I've really heard people say in real life.
I'm one of the ones who took a while to get it. I think it took me about a week. At first I thought it was one person, but it didn't make sense that she was planning so many different weddings. Then I thought it was a LOT of people posting ONCE about the wedding they're planning, and I thought to myself, I wish they'd do like... a series of posts!
Duh, they do.
The reason I stuck with Bee is because I find it so user friendly! Much better than other sites like The Knot. I immediately understood the group blog thing. Many features have been added recently, like the user profile/bios and i don't use that as much. I chceck out the gallery every once in a while.
When I first got engaged someone sent me the link to weddingbee and I think I was just really overwhelmed by the idea of planning a wedding that I took one look at it, kind of freaked out and didn't come back to it until months later. When I did finally come back to it, I think it made more sense to me just because I was already in the thick of planning and finally understood what all the fuss was about : ) Sometimes I wish I had taken the time to figure it out that very first time, because I definitely needed the advice. I think for someone who never went to wedding blogs (or even knew that they existed) before planning her own wedding, it was a little confusing that it was multiple people blogging, and honestly, I do think I use it more for the boards than for the reading the blogs.
Once I did take the time to figure it out, it is pretty user friendly. I think the information you can find here from real people is a lot more useful than the standard wedding sites I started with (the knot, martha stewart, etc.).
Now that I think about it, something that might help is a list of all the current bees on the homepage with a link to their most recent post. As long as it dosen't take up half of the homepage : ) That might help people realize right away that there's more than one bee blogging. Just a thought...
I had been to Weddingbee a couple times before I really knew what it was, when it came up on google searches I had done. I initially thought it was just message boards, and didn't really understand the whole blog portion of it.
What helped me figure it out was when I was reading blog comments I saw that people had different titles: Bees, Members, Hostess...etc. Then I found the list of Miss and Mrs Bloggers and went through a few of those. From there I kind of realized that it was an everyday kind of thing, where the Bees updated their blogs daily.
When I finally understood the awesomeness of Weddingbee, I can't even remember how many countless hours I spent just finding new Bees to read their entire weddings.
