We didn’t.

A friend who recently got engaged had an engagement party (thrown by her mother).  Most folks from our social circle didn’t know what to expect or do at it; they’re not the norm around here, at least not amongst my friends and family.

We did. It was very low key. At my parents place. We were engaged in September and had the party end of October. 30 ppl (close friends and family) and actually our parents had never met so that was the main purpose. We just got a bunch of platters from costco and champagne! It was a blast!

I didn’t have one for a few reasons:

1) I think that there are already too many expensive parties being thrown in our honor

2) My family is from Long Island and his family is from Vermont so we would never be able to get them together for one party

3) We’re having an intimate wedding so the engagement party would have to be pretty small as well

we considered it very briefly when we thought our engagement would be on the longer side (2 years), but when we decided to cut our engagement down to 14 months, we decided not to. we wanted to save our money for the wedding.

My MOH enlisted the help of my BMs to throw us a surprise engagement party when we were in town checking out venues. She got my brothers to fly in, my FI’s parents and grandparents were there, and a ton of our friends from college. It was a great way for all of the families and friends to meet and get to know each other.

ETA: The actual party was about 3 months after we got engaged but it was the first time we were in town after the engagement.

He proposed in Texas (where his family lives) during a week vacation at the lake, so we were able to celebrate with everyone. Once we got back to Vegas my mom had a little engagement party for us at her house so that my side of the family could celebrate too. It was fun!

Yes, I am having one in February. It’s going to be low key at a friends apartment in Manhattan with a few appetizers and champagne and then dinner. Nothing too fancy.

FI’s parents did.  We had a pig/lamb roast on their farm on a really hot summer day.  It was great to introduce the families to each other, we had about 150 ppl.  Very casual and lovely.

No, we didn’t.  I didn’t really see a need for one.  Maybe I would have invited people over or something, but we were just too busy for a while.
