Our dog is just excited that i eat more...which means he gets more little tid bits. The cat has removed me from the "approved petters" list, she always sits/lays on my lap and purrs while i work at the computer, after she got kicked a few times by the baby she has not come back around, (she is tempermental anyways so i am sure she will get over it when the baby gets here).
I think that they sense something is up, there has been lots of rearranging and family visiting lately.
My dog gets EXTREMELY upset when I throw up, if he's still in bed he cries, and if he's out in the house, he puts his nose to my cheek. Which is really obnoxious, when I'm turbo-barfing.
But his most drastic new behavior is that I've caught him continuously trying to sneak in bed with us. We don't let him sleep in the bed (well let's be honest, DH doesn't, I let the dog in bed every morning after DH goes to work) but for the past month or so, the dog has been creeping into bed in the middle of the night. Seriously, he doesn't jump, he tiptoes, and curls up very tiny at the foot, between DH and I. This is a new behavior, previously, he NEVER got in the bed when DH was home.
And the dog is a german shepherd, so for him to be so careful that he often doesn't wake me is saying something.
@octobermom: Awww... poor kitty.
@Quietserenity: Our pup tries to get in the bed too. She likes for us to be together at all times. She follows us into the bathroom when we take our bath. She never did that before.
My shepherd definitely knew I was pregnant. He always came into the bathroom to smell me pee (ick!). It was pretty annoying but he wasn't trying to be. He also was really clingy and protective the whole time. We let him come up on the bed until about month 8!
@MightySapphire: I think it is cute when they are protective, but I am afraid that she will cause me to fall when I get further along.
@MightySapphire: No, she is on my feet (she is actually on them) and she makes me trip. It is only in the house. I don't walk her because she pulls alot. My husband walks her and I walk in front.
One of our dogs knew, the other (more of a puppy) had no idea..which doesn't surprise me lol But, Buck became super cuddly during it, and everytime voices were raised (even if we weren't arguing) he would come and sit right in front of me.
My dogs defintately knew. They did the opposite of the protective thing and wanted nothing to do with me. However, the night I went into labor all of a sudden my dog insisted on being next to me if not on me.
Yes my cat knew there was something different. After I was really visibly pregnant she really noticed because when she layed on me, the baby would kick her. She didnt like that to much but she layed with me anyways. She was a really good kitty!!
I think my boxer knows that something is different, but only because she usually lays in my lap when we watch tv, and all 60 pounds of her no longer fit.
My dogs were completely clueless. They were still trying to sit my lap at 8 and 9 months pregnant. And it's not like they're little dogs; they're freaking 60 and 80 pounds! They honestly couldn't figure out why there wasn't any room for them.
A friend of mine said her previously well-trained dog started acting out, having accidents indoors, etc very early in her pregnancy, and she was told (don't know by who) that the dog can sense the pregnancy. I guess she probably smelled different. I don't think my dogs have noticed.
@owlbride: Then your Boxer is way smarter than mine! She didn't have a damn clue. She would still try and walk all over me and step on my belly. Needless to say she was not thrilled about getting pushed off me! She's a little dense ;)
@trugem: it's not only changes in your behavior, although I'm sure that helps. I wouldn't be surprised if your dog actually smelled the difference on you.
have you ever heard of those service animals that are for people who suffer from epilepisy, anxiety attacks, diabetes, etc? it's because they can actually smell the attack before a person can feel it coming on. it has something to do with changes in hormones and/or other things like that.
pretty neat, what animals can do!
We have 3 dogs. The two labs haven't been acting different at all. The beagle started sniffing my stomach like crazy yesterday! My sister's dog did the same thing to her. I think she may smell something, but I don't think she knows what it is.
None of them have been more protective than usual, but it will be interesting to see if that changes when my belly gets bigger.

I think my pup noticed that I am pregnant. I think she picked up on the changes in our behavior. My husband is always watching me and goes into the bathroom with me when I get sick. She follows me in the bathroom everytime I go. She even sits on the back of my legs or by my side if I am sick. She sits closer to me than she used to (she sits on my feet instead of near my feet). She sniffs my breasts and stomach. Did your pet notice when you got pregnant?
