Im currently almost 10 weeks pregnant, and this is one of my vain worries. I am not as afraid of stretch marks (although I really would love to not get them), as I am about extra skin on the tummy. Does that ever go away? What can you do about that? For reference, I am 5’2, roughly 115-120 pre pregnancy. I had a decent body going into this, but definitely could have toned up more. What was the situation for you?

@Ms.Pink: from what I heard if you gain the weight slowly you give your skin a chance to stretch Nicely. Same with losing the weight, dont lose it too fast or your skin won’t have a chance to adjust.
breastfeeding also helps.

I lost the weight immediately- I was all belly. But my belly skin isnt quite what it used to be. My ob said ab exercises will fix it. I’m 8 weeks pp for reference.

@Ms.Pink: Mine never went away and got progressievly worse with each pregnancy.

It did with my first daughter (had when I was 26- gained 40lbs), not so much with my second daughter (had at 34- gained 30lbs). I wonder if it was just me, or if how old you are has something to do with how easily you bounce back. Still, it is not that bad- I think I still look pretty decent.

I gained an astronomical amount of weight when I was pregnant (read 75 pounds), and I can tell you that my stomach most certainly will never be the same again – short of a tunny tuck, and even then.
i have a 6 inch C-section scar across my lower abdomen, and the whole middle section is loose and it has stretch marks. Even when I’m at my smallest weight (which I’m not right now), the loose belly skin an stretch marks are still quite apparent. It’s not a good look.
just don’t do what I did, which was take the pregnancy as an excuse to eat everything ever.

@Ms.Pink: I’ve lost all the weight but my tummy is still a bit poochy. I’m working out a lot and it’s getting better slowly. Hopefully by summer I’ll be back to normal! Just don’t over-do it, and be committed to returning to a healthy lifestyle pp and you’ll be fine!

I got back down within 10 pounds of my pre-pregnancy weight, and my tummy is not the same. I do still have stretch marks (but they are much, mugh lighter in color) but I also still have extra skin, like a pooch.
I am currently pregnant with #2, and I think it will be a long time before I have a toned midsection again.
I’m 5’3 and before my first pregnancy I was just under 130lbs, and I gained over 50lbs. I got back down to 136 but still a solid size or two above what I was before.

Not even slightly :-/ I was 23, I gained 15 lbs during pregnancy, baby was 11 lbs.. so I actually came out weighing less than when I got pregnant! But I never got rid of my post baby belly 🙁 13 years later… 🙁
But after 2 more babies in the future (or even just one!) I will be getting a tummy tuck. I even lost about 60 lbs and my stomach got smaller but there’s only so much you can do for post baby skin. You can’t repair it once it’s been stretched. I actually found once I lost weight, the skin was worse because there was nothing keeping it plumped up!

I was 27 when I got pregnant with dd and 28 when she was born. She is now 2yrs old and I am 30!
I gained 40-45lbs with my pregnancy and hovered around 140-145lbs for almost 2 years. I was breastfeeding, eating like a horse and didn’t have the motivation to lose weight.
I didn’t get any stretch marks and my belly seemed impossible but since I started working out and watching my food intake 6 months ago, i definitely noticed changes and my stomach is starting to look like my pre prego belly. I have only lost about 10lbs the past 6 months, but I never expected to lose weight fast. (I’m 5’3). now that I’m only 5-10lbs away from my IDEAL weight I know it will take even LONGER probably another 6 months to lose that but I am hopeful. I dont have any loose saggy skin. We are planning to TTC this spring for our second child and I’m hoping i will control myself better this time lol. I’m more worried about stomach muscle separation than anything.

I’d guess it’s a combination of of genetics/luck, how much weight you gain, how many pregnancies you’ve had, and how active you are throughout pregnancy.
I think my mom’s might have went back at least close to normal after me (gained about 31 lbs and she was underweight to start) but hers never went back to normal after my twin brothers (+41 lbs or so). Extra skin is still there 25 years later.
I would think one of the best things you can do is gain weight slowly and stay within the recommended 25-35lb range and stay active throughout your pregnancy. But even then I’d guess it’s a combination of genetics and luck.
I’m 32 weeks so no experience yet.

I am 31, 5’3, 110 lbs pre-pregnancy. I gained 21 lbs during my pregnancy. I did work out (walking, yoga, light weights) through my entire pregnancy, so that helped keep me toned. I gained everything in my belly. I also ate really healthy and drank a lot of water. I never went through that “I’m pregnant and I can eat anything I want” phase. I knew it would be harder to get my body back if I let it go during pregnancy.
My stomach went back to normal (flat and toned) 4-5 weeks post partum, and I pretty much attribute it 100% to breastfeeding. I dropped all the weight so quickly and everything just kinda firmed back into place.
I do yoga 2/week, but that’s it for working out. I know that I’m probably just really lucky!
Here’s a link to a post I did at 3 weeks pp about the return of my body. http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/post-partum-body#axzz2sTSX3gi2

This was one of my major worries too. I am 5’3′ and was 132lbs when I got pregnant. I gained 26lbs and all in my belly. I didn’t get any stretch marks and my belly went back to about 90% normal by 6 weeks PP. I am now 12 weeks PP and my stomach is totally back to normal with no loose skin.
