I’m looking for a salon around here that does gel NAILS, not just gel POLISH (i.e. Shellac, Gelish, etc.). I’ve had the shellac multiple times and I’m just not satisfied with it. I want the gel nails where they glue tips to your nails and then scoop the sticky, thick gel out of a pot with a brush, and brush that on your nails + tips, and cure it under UV. It looks just like an acrylic French manicure but it is NOT acrylic. The gel brand I’ve seen at Sally’s is called IBD.
Is there any name for what these nails are called? Every salon I’ve called asking about “gel nails” has asked if I meant shellac, and when I say no, gel nails with tips, they say, “Oh, you mean acrylics?” No!
Someone here must know what I’m talking about, and if there’s a name for it, or if I should just give up hope and get the kit and the light at Sally’s and do them myself. I can’t stand my short, broken, brittle nails anymore but I don’t want to ruin them with acrylics. Plus, this is what I want to do for the wedding, so if I need to DIY them because no salon around here knows what the heck I’m talking about, I need to get some practice in before the big day.

I think if you go in and ask for “pink and whites” that might help a little? That’s typically what I ask for….and they use gel…not gel polish. I’ve tried the gel polish too, and i’ve tried to like it, but I just don’t.
Another option that I actually love is called the “dips.” I don’t know if every salon does this, but mine does. Basically they don’t use acryclic or anything fake, it is all your real naail. Except they use a certain kind of like hardening polish and they dip your nails in the powder that is used for acrylics. I actually prefer this to gels because it is your real nail with a natural look, but it is also hard and looks really nice. Then when the time comes to remove them after about 2 weeks, they just peel right off. Worth a shot!

I always got gel nails. they don’t actually put tips on, thats only with acrylics, but they can “make tips” so your nail is longer. Saying the tip thing might be throwing them off 🙂 The product my nail lady used was called gelousy. But salons should now what you are talking about! Maybe say you want fake nails, gels not acrylics, and not the shellac. Good luck! that is frusterating!

I usually ask for the “clear gel.” I get clear gel with the gel polish over it so it lasts longer. Maybe say “clear gel with tips” ?

I stopped going to get my nails done because of a lack of understanding when I went in. My pinkie waas grinded down to the thickness of paper. Im going to attempt to find a salon without a language barrier.

I think you’re talking about gel extensions? The salon I go to offers just gel polish or gel extensions where it sounds like they add on tips.

I had Gelish nails done last weekend, and had tips put on. The nail tech made them pretty thick. She put 2 coats of the foundation on, then 2 coats of the colored soak-off polish.
I think what you’re looking for is the LED Gel, which can be used in place of the soak-off polish.
